Reviews:
Twenty-three tracks of female vocal fronted studio pop psych from the Aquarian age! As taken from the booklet text: Remember Mystic Males? Well they didn’t get to that mountaintop on their own. Their soul searchin’ spelunks and mystical quests found their yang in subjects their gals were into, mainly peace, love, and plants. So here are the better halves. Fair maids with visions of harmony and pipes like magic flutes; all from the Aquarian Age. All fully committed to IT. And whether it’s Hollywood folk rock strip-mined from the nearby canyons or Scarsdale theater pop gone groovy, it’ll all set the scene. Your scene. Hear the sounds. Her sounds. The sounds of She.

A gal-themed set from the great Soft Sounds series -- one that features some incredibly groovy work from the late 60s -- a hip mix of Sunshine Pop, psyche rock, and more! The female vocals really tie the tunes together nicely -- especially as a number of singers seem to share similar modes when approaching their music -- echoes of earlier folk, touches of vocal jazz, and occasional sweet sounds that really flesh things out nicely. Most of the backings are groovy enough to almost be funk at points -- especially when percussion kicks up, or basslines really get going -- and there's also some freakishly fuzzy moments that really stand out too! As with other volumes, there's some great track-by-track notes on the tunes -- and titles include "Psychedelic Movement" by The Ravelles, "Green Plant" by Amanda Ambrose, "The Aquarians" by The Aquarians, "If I Didn't Want To See You Anymore" by Morningstarr, "See The Farmer" by Bunches A Good, "The Lady Barber" by Lynn Castle, "What Do You Do When You've Lost Your Love" by Guardians Of The Rainbow, "Flowers In The Air" by Sally Eaton, "Billy Sunshine" by Sugar Townes, "All I Dream" by Estelle Levitt, "In The Middle Of The Night" by The Pipe Dream, and "Meditation 1968" by Ellen Margulies.

The band released two albums for Decca Records: Ratchell in 1971 and Ratchell II in 1972. After the band's dissolution, Messer and the Couchois brothers went on to release an album on Warner Bros. Records in 1979 under the Couchois banner, while Byrom went on to work as a songwriter and session musician.Since 2008, the Couchois brother's official official band website is http://www.couchoisband.com/

Artist: Larry Byrom
Born: December 27, 1948, United States
Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000s
Genres: Rock Instrument: Guitar (Acoustic)

Biography:
Guitarist and songwriter Larry Byrom has performed on over a 100 albums in genres ranging from rock to country to somewhere comfortable in between. Byrom was born in 1948 in Huntsville, AL, but spent a lot of his childhood in South Bend, IN. He dropped out of high school to try out his dream of reaching rock stardom. When it didn't work out as he planned, he made a detour and found success on his own terms.
In the mid-'60s, Byrom joined a band called the Precious Few. He went right to professional status, performing on Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars. Byrom's next step was to head out to California where he joined the group Hard Times, appearing on the television show Where the Action Is. The Hard Times group called it quits before long. Byrom, undaunted, got together with Nick St. Nicholas and formed another band, T.I.M.E., which unabbreviated is Trust in Men Everywhere.
Before 1970, T.I.M.E. had transformed into a new rock band, Steppenwolf. Byrom recorded a number of hit songs with the group, including some he penned himself, like "Hey Lawdy Mama." In 1972, he left Steppenwolf to start another band, Ratchell. When it had little success, he went back home to Alabama to think about his career and where he wanted it to go. Where it went was to country music and into the studio.
By 1980, Byrom was living in Nashville, TN. He soon began working steadily as a session guitarist for superstar country artists like Barbara Mandrell, Eddie Rabbit, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and Kenny Rogers. Byrom's skills with slide, acoustic, and electric guitar, as well as his songwriting, kept him in constant demand. Over the years he added more recordings to his list of credits, working with well-known country singers such as Lorrie Morgan, Brooks & Dunn, Tanya Tucker, Randy Travis, Clint Black, and many others.

The recording of this album initially began in 1969, mostly in Mikaels own primitive studio , but was seriously delayed as Mikael was arrested and imprisoned for smoking hashish. While in jail he wrote the song 'Artificial Prana' which was featured on the album. Mikael does fantastic Swedish folky psych rock progressive music backed by members from legendary Swedish underground bands like Flasket Brinner, Kebnekajse and Turid. One of the best, most influential and appreciated recordings from the Swedish hippie underground. I heartly reccomend that album..i am sure all of you will like that...Cheers!

This album from 1972 by former Steampacket II member Mikael Ramel is a curiosity among curiosities. Ramel is your basic one man band on this record and while many who attempt the one man format sometimes fall short of making a cohesive album, Ramel seems to thrive in undertaking it all himself. As for the music, my best description would be folk-psych-prog-rock. The first track "Hφr du pε?" features open tuned guitars, well-recorded percussion and a lovely melody. It ends up sounding like a cross between Crosby, Stills and Nash and something Pete Townshend would write. The second track is a bit bluesy and whimsical that's almost Cream like in its execution. The record is all over the place: Pink Floyd, CSN, early Al Stewart, Pete Townshend. Moments will remind listeners of all those from time to time and probably a few others, too. Ramel uses tape recorder manipulation to produce many of the electric guitar parts. Speeding up solo's to produce some interesting sounds. Several songs feature solid flute playing somewhere between Ray Thomas and Ian Anderson. Violin is also a featured solo instrument and is put to outstanding use on several tracks. For the most part the album is rather low key and somewhat quiet in tone. " Lεngt in i naturen" uses outdoor sounds for a soundscape. A terrific organ solo keys the track and will remind one of Pink Floyd's "Several Small Species..." track from Ummagumma when the organ fades out and leaves the outdoor sounds with curious sped up vocal noises. Ramel's variety of instrumentation, strong sense of melody and his psychedelic sensibilities manage to take a record that could easily come apart at the seems and turn it into something unique. While none of the album's tracks are overly progressive, many have prog leanings such as the nearly eleven minute "Artificiell Prana". The track starts off with a brief bit of tape manipulation into an almost Doobie Bros. feel, if the Doobies had been from Sweeden. Something about the way the acoustic guitars are produced has that Doobies sound. Numerous solos abound on this tune and it probably is the highlight of the record. The bonus tracks on the CD reissue don't really do anything to surpass the original album versions, although "Jam-jam", which is not part of the original LP, does have nice Zappaesque guitar work.To sum it up, the first time I heard the album, I thought it was curious, but with further listening, I've decided it's still a curious record, but it has unique charm all its own.

Straightforward hard psych record. Sounds more like what was happening in the 1960s Dutch scene with albums from Cosmic Dealer, The Outsiders and Q65. Some good fuzz and older organ sounds. Opening track on each side is instrumental, and represents the best material. Also reminds me of the vast boneyard of US post psych albums from 1970 on labels like Paramount, ABC, Epic, Rare Earth and Mercury.

Scott Fagan - South Atlantic Blues (us 1968)

Scott Fagan - South Atlantic Blues (us 1968, Atco SD 33-267 LP)

04. The Carnival Is Ended
05. South Atlantic Blues
06. Nothing But Love
07. Tenement Halls
08. In Your Hands

Scott's first albums "South Atlantic Blues" (ATCO 1968) (immortalized by Jasper Johns as "Scott Fagan Record") and Many Sunny Places (RCA 1976) created the "Contemporary Caribbean" or "Caribilly" genre so widely popularized by Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney and others. (Check out Nothin' But Love, Carnival's Ended and South Atlantic Blues)
In 1971, Scott wrote the first Rock Opera (SOON) produced on Broadway. The cast included…Peter Allen, Vicki Sue Robinson, Richard Gere, Nell Carter, Leata Galloway, Pamela Pentony, Pendelton Brown, Dennis Belline, Joe Butler, Marta Heflin, and Marion Ramsey.
"SOON was our attempt to "bring to light" the absurdity and cruelty of the music business, and it's destructive effects on artists and society".The Music Industry was not amused, SOON closed immediately and Scott Fagan was blacklisted. Did the blacklist work? Have you ever heard of him? Scott is one of very few artists to have taken a public stand against the exploitive, destructive and all but omnipotent music industry… A daring act for which he has paid dearly.
And now, because of the digital revolution, the meltdown of the music industry, and after 37 years of being blacklisted, a new chapter begins. You have the opportunity to discover him, his beautiful singing, his timeless writing and his independent, innovative and original points of view, at http://www.scottfagan.com/ and at http://www.lilfishrecords.com/.

Scott Fagan was a brilliant wild child from the Virgin Islands. ‘De white man from de black lan’ who was “banned from the biz" in 1971. “Ah…my mother my sister and I were among the poorest people that I had ever seen. Still, I was never without love or hope. I saw that many people were, I felt these things and I began to sing.” And sing he did. In August 1964 Scott stepped off a 50-foot sailboat just south of Coconut Grove, FL. By September, (on his first day in New York City), Scott was signed by the legendary Doc Pomus (Save The Last Dance For Me, Teenager In Love, Viva Las Vegas) and in October he was signed to Columbia Records. By way of warning, Doc said "Scott, it's gonna be rough, you sing too good!" Here's what some others had to say: Cashbox Magazine: Spinal Tap melodies…His range is phenomenal. Billboard: "A Poet" William Krasilovsky, Author of THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC, l and ll: "Scott Fagan is a genius. I'll certify that." Scott's first albums "South Atlantic Blues" (ATCO 1968) (immortalized by Jasper Johns as "Scott Fagan Record") and Many Sunny Places (RCA 1976) created the "Contemporary Caribbean"

Review:
From the same with-it collector-folks who brought us those Gentle Sounds For Gentle People '60s soft-rock comps not so long ago, comes this new compilation unearthing the tunes of 23 "tripped-out troubadours from 1965-1970". These so-called "Mystic Males" are long-haired, bearded (or at least mustachioed) mellow crooners, hailing from places like LA's Sunset Strip and New York's Greenwich Village. Professional and otherwise singer/songwriters getting into (for real or for, they might be hoping, the bucks) the Hippy vibe. Mostly, they sing about Girls. And Nature. And Love. And Girls. (At least five of the song titles here are simply girls' names.) Suiting such subject matter, these tracks tend towards gentle vocals, gentle vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and drifting folky melodies -- often times backed by lush orchestration and groovy beats. Some are twee, some are swingin'. Hadn't heard of any of these dudes before, except Dino Valente, but maybe you have -- here's a few, with song titles too: Chip Taylor "You Should Be From Monterey", Tommy Roe "Paisley Dreams", Teddy Neeley "Autumn Afternoon", Kenny O'Dell "Flower Girl", Thomas Hill "Glider Pilot", Bill & Howdy "Misty Morning Confrontation"... no, don't know 'em? Well those song titles ought to give you some idea of what they sound like, and also the liner notes give plenty of obscure details about each obscure track. And some of 'em are gems. We like these Mystic Males.

Review:
The fifth installment in the Soft Sound For Gentle People series features twenty-two far-out pop psych duos from the late ’60s. It pretty much began with Sonny and Cher. When the teener template of Paul and Paula and Dick and Deedee got superimposed on the hip set, a new genre was born. The success of co-ed pairings like Mimi and Richard and Nino and April had coffee house folkies shacking up in droves and soon every town had it’s own dynamic duo. There were variations too. Paul and Mary found their Peter. John Phillips had two chicks so he had to find another Papa. But the sound was what made it, the call and response, the traded verses—love stories acted out over twelve-strings ringin’, like shaggy-topped Romeos and Juliets in tight slacks and pilgrim belts. You’ve heard some of the reissues—the Blackburns and Snows, the Jims and Jeans—their stories and music made public again after years in obscurity. Now hear the ones who didn’t quite crack the radio charts, at least not for long. The ones whose songs remain unsung. Heroes and heroines in the nightclubs and studio booths. Reaching out in the darkness, and the sunshine too. In love and touching forever. She and He. He and She.

Murphy Blend’s (named after a pipe tobacco) only album is one of the best and rarest early German progressive rock records. Excellent hammond organ that delivers a unique heavy psychedelic Krautrock sound. It was originally released on the legendary KUCKUCK label in 1970. This album is a perfect example of the early 70s German progressive Krautrock scene and should be part of every serious 70s progressive rock collection.English lyrics.

Murphy Blend biography:Murphy Blend were responsible for one of the best albums released on Polydor's legendary Kuckuck label. They were a quintet comprising Wolf-Rodiger Uhlig (organ, cembalo, grand piano, vocals), Wolfgang Rumler (guitar, vocals), Andreas Scholz (bass) and Achim Schmidt (drums). "First Loss" was recorded in Union Studio, Munich, during October - December 1970, produced by Jonas Porst (the manager of Ihre Kinder!) and engineered by Thomas Klemt.
Murphy Blend revealed a fine blend in which Uhlig utilised his keyboards to incorporate classical themes into their heavy progressive music. He had studied classical music for three years in Berlin. The songs were melodic, textured by heavy guitar and organ riffs. The album contained six proper tracks (mostly written by Uhlig) and the shortest German song of all time: the 3/10 of a second long "Happiness"! It's impossible to name highlights as all material is truly great! Sadly, Murphy Blend disbanded soon after recording this album. Andreas Scholz went on the heavy progressive Blackwater Park in 1971. Wolf-Rudiger Uhlig guested on Frumpy's third album, "By The Way" in 1972.

Most excellent Krautrock from 1971. IF the band hadnt broken up after their first and only release they would no doubt have gone far. Andreas Scholz went on to play in the heavy progressive band Blackwater Park in 1971. Wolf-Rudiger Uhlig guested on Frumpy's third album, "By The Way" in 1972.Named after a pipe tobacco (more surprisingly theres also a brand of coffee called Murphys blend ^_^), the Berlin group Murphy Blend were always quite a mystery. They were also a rarity in early German rock, as they combined the psychedelic Krautrock sound with heavy rock, blues and classical musics. Their music had hints of early Jane and Pell Mell, but apart from that they had a unique style, with a strongly accented vocalist, topical lyrics and heady instrumentals, heavily featuring chunky Hammond organ. Murphy Blend revealed a fine blend in which Uhlig utilised his keyboards to incorporate classical themes into their heavy progressive music. He had studied classical music for three years in Berlin. The songs were melodic, textured by heavy guitar and organ riffs. The album contained six proper tracks (mostly written by Uhlig) and the shortest German song of all time: the 3/10 of a second long "Happiness"! .Similar bands that I know of would be Tetragon, Blackwater Park, Virus, Gift, Birth Control & Lucifer's Friend etc.

Reviews:
4th volume of this incredibly researched gray area reissue series, focusing on soft-psych, etc. twenty-three tracks from California and beyond, 1966-1971. As per this label's standard: exceptional attention to detail, with lengthy background notes that piece it all together. Most tracks from obcure non-comped 7" releases, closing in on 40 years ago!

The sounds are soft, the people are gentle, and the music is as groovy as groovy can be! The CD is the fab fourth entry in one of our favorite series of all time -- and like the rest, it's a tremendous collection of lost pop treasures from the end of the 60s -- all in a magical space between folkies, hippies, and the mainstream -- served up with the best aspects of all three! The style here is totally great -- and offers up a nice contrast to some of the better-known pop of the late 60s -- not in a way that's more experimental or challenging, but just in a way that's even more unboundedly creative! Tracks are extremely well-chosen, with notes on every single number -- and titles include "Geordie" by The Rooney Brothers, "Sunshine World" by The Cosmic Brotherhood, "Little Faces" by The Luv Birds, "Dancing Girl" by The 1st Century, "When I'm Gone" by Lux, "Donnie" by Chuck Barris Syndicate, "Day In The Sun" by The Fragile Lime, "Land Of Make Believe" by The Fourth Dimension, "When The Sun's Gone Down" by Incredible Fog, "Boston Bay" by Smithsonian Institute, and "When Once It Was Good" by First National Band.

Review:
This series of CDs from Pet Records is supposed to be devoted to sunshine pop releases from the second half of the 1960s -- but most of the acts here know a good beat when they find it. Starting with the Mojo Men (billed by this time as Mojo) doing "Candle to Burn," the makers have generally chosen psych-pop sides with a beat. Even the most "produced" side here, "January Girl" by Pipedream (who apparently didn't exist as a group), manages to throw together enough of a rhythm section and effects to make it worthwhile psychedelic rock, even if the song itself sounds like a leftover from a sub-Hair musical. The Fun and Games apparently hailed from Texas, but that didn't stop them from sounding as spaced-out and languidly pretty as their trippy California surroundings on "Close to Carmel." Bryan's mysterious "Learn to Love" actually comes off as closer to psychedelic rock (with a decent beat) than most of the rest here, despite its being the product of a studio ensemble -- Tommy Roe producer Steve Clark evidently knew how to create those sounds on the fly. Leon Russell was one of the prime movers of Le Cirque, along with Marc Benno and Jerry Riopelle of Parade, and for a piece with a fairly conventional brass-loaded accompaniment, it does achieve a colorful effect with its trippy lyrics. The disc gets better as it goes along, the talent of the results (or both) becoming very imposing midway through -- far and away the best cut on this album is "Time Goes Backwards" by Jim & Jean, the folk duo; this psychedelic folk track is a totally unexpected permutation of their sound that lingers long after it's over. The Hung Jury's "Buses" is also pleasant psych pop in a Monkees-like mode, and "Lovin' Day" by the Status Cymbal is a surprisingly garage punk-ish cut to come out of Felton Jarvis' orbit in Nashville. Jacobson & Tansley were a virtually unknown Curt Boettcher project from 1966, whose "Dream With Me" managed to chart in New York and Cleveland, and deserved better. And the Second Helping's mouthful of a title, "Floating Downstream on an Inflatable Rubber Ball" -- which prominently features a pre-Loggins & Messina Kenny Loggins, with sitar and spacey lyrics -- makes for surprisingly pleasant listening. Less interesting and more ponderous is Stained Glass' "A Scene In Between," which is more pure psychedelia than sunshine pop -- produced by Rick Jarrard, it does have a nicely brittle lead guitar part that recalls the 12-string on "Eight Miles High" slowed down a bit.

Review:
The second volume of the Soft Sounds for Gentle People series digs up another fantastic batch of groovy sunshine pop obscurities from the heyday of the West Coast scene, possibly even surpassing its predecessor for sheer quality and consistency -- it's amazing how much of this stuff the major labels were putting out, how much of it is truly great, and how much of it has for so long remained relegated to the dustbin of history. Like last time, there's a strong psychedelic dimension to these songs, and nothing would seem glaringly out of place on a Nuggets compilation, but the radiant harmonies and lush orchestral arrangements wonderfully capture a more peaceful, even earnest side of late-'60s flower-power pop -- nothing here sounds horribly dated, either, especially standouts like the Collage's "My Mind's at Ease," the Pleasure Fair's "Nursery Rhyme," the Garden Club's "Little Girl Lost and Found," and the Family's "San Francisco Waits." The legitimacy of this disc is a question and some of the material sounds mastered directly from the original vinyl, but the sequencing and liner notes are excellent and it's hard not to wish official releases were handled with so much obvious care and affection.

Review:
Subtitled "Far-out and beautiful tracks from California and beyond 1966-1971," Soft Sounds for Gentle People scours the nooks and crannies of the sunshine pop archives to unearth nearly two dozen singles and album cuts long forgotten by all but the most rabid collectors. Although there's a strong psychedelic dimension to the material -- nothing here would seem out of place in the Nuggets series -- the radiant harmonies and lush orchestral arrangements wonderfully capture the more tranquil side of late-'60s pop; sweet but never syrupy, should-have-been hits like the Pleasure Fair's "Today," the Lewis and Clarke Expedition's "Blue Revelations," and the Moorpark Intersection's David Axelrod-produced "I Think I'll Just Go and Find Me a Flower" sound far fresher and even more contemporary than the overplayed chart hits that dominate oldies radio. Most of the tracks are mastered directly from the original vinyl, and while there are some cracks and pops present in the mix, the overall fidelity is excellent and the liner notes are witty and informative -- all told, a fantastic package, although its legitimacy is questionable.
