A Band I know practically nothing at all about other than the fact they were from New zealand and released this Jangly little gem of an lp sometime in 1987. Sounds similar to The Bats, Clean, Verlaines, Feelies, Sneaky feelings and The Chills but with their own slightly experimental tendencies in areas, Very good stuff deffinitely worth checking out if you're a fan of those mentioned bands.

Drunk on Poppy Milk
The Wild Poppies merge convoluted jangle pop with classic guitar psychedelia obtaining very musical arrangement. I wonder how many able bands appeared out of nowhere, shot with a single excellent album and then dissolved in eternity once again. Quite often such albums as Heroine are much better than commercially successful ones selling out in millions only as a result of immeasurable hype.

I really don't know much about this band so I guess I will start off with what I do know. The Wild Poppies were from New Zealand and released music sometime in the eighties. Although they were not on Flying Nun you can definitely hear that they shared a lot of influences with their artists. Other than that pretty much nothing is known about this band which is kind of cool in a mysterious way. Judging from the cover artwork and album title I wouldn't be surprised if substance abuse had something to do with them disappearing off the face of the earth. There has to be some reason they are completely unheard of because this record is solid front to back.
Most of the songs on "Heroine" have that signature New Zealand jangle on them and really strong pop song writing. For me its one of those records where every time you listen to it you walk away with a new favorite song. As far as I know none of the Wild Poppies catalogue ever made it to CD format and I think you would probably have a hard time finding a physical copy of any of their records on vinyl so I am going to post all of "Heroine".
Be warned, can cause physical dependence.

Recording sessions took place in 1975 at an old Theatre named Val de Gally where they set the recording equipment and two Revox machines. In 1976, new home recordings done at a Paris flat were added to the final mix.
Released as a private edition of only 200 copies in 1977 on the private Joint label (but recorded two years earlier, in 1975), Warlus Songs could be regarded as the king of all French 70s obscure private pressings.Warlus was the brainchild of young musician Richard Maubert, who created a mini- masterpiece of twisted, melancholic fuzzed-out psychedelic pop, with a charming homemade sound/production and druggy atmosphere. Sung in English, it also brings to mind some obscure USA private pressings like Kath. This is a very special record that will appeal to both psych aficionados and fans of 70s DIY weirdness.If you like other French private pressings like Dandelion and Les Temps Heureux, you’ll be amazed when you hear Warlus.

"There exist a few French rarities issued during the seventies that had both '60s Anglo-Saxon references (implying English only lyrics), acoustic guitars, a distinguished underground flavour (implying a skinny production), psychedelic background... and no recognition at all.Warlus is one of them.Distant (drums and electric guitar parts are rather far-out), slightly echoed "ballroom" sound, acoustic guitar all along : the sixties are not very far away here.Looping ballads, soft -male only- acid folk voice, very nicely used sound effects, musically a little "light" by parts (deserved a producer).Compositions are slow but good (deserved a little more rock), a little too slow for sure at today's scale (no groove, sorry), but this is the very charm of this album."

From Cincinnati, Ohio, this outfit used to gig frequently with Westfauster and played a heavy, very keyboard-dominated blend of music. Their albums have distinct psychedelic influences and although both have their moments are sometimes a bit messy. Both albums are sought-after by collectors. Lenny LeBlanc went on to become a successful Christian music artist, whilst Mike Wheeler who played with the band in their last two years, went on to work with Grammy winning Nashville songwriter Mike Reid. Wheeler also led an act called Wheels, who recorded on Boardwalk, with an album produced by Craig Fuller, and who toured with Little Feat in '78. He's also worked more recently with Paul Barrere. Know Thyself has also appeared on Sixties Archive Vol. 8 (CD).

Actually hailing from Kansas, the Wizard’s were an obscure country-influenced outfit whose debut album featured some fine versions of classics from the period, including Buffy St Marie’s Codine, as well as some excellent originals such as Misty Mountainside, Country Dawn and She Rides With Witches. The original five-piece band enjoyed considerable local success, and eventually found themselves playing the Fillmore East, a gig which led to offers of a number of record deals which the group initially declined. However, towards the end of 1969 Mercury Records finally convinced them to sign to the label, and their eponymous first (and only) album was recorded in the summer of 1970 in San Francisco. During the recording of the album, several band members decided they would rather play jazz, and duly departed to pursue their interests , leaving Mercury with a newly recorded album and no band to promote it. Mercury lost interest and the album sunk without trace. There is a lot of fine stuff on this album, and the band exhibited a particularly impressive range of tight vocal harmonies . A highly recommended album that is extremely collectable.

Who gave acid to these kids? Chemically induced or not, they committed a psychedelic gem of “Present Tense” (1968, by Sagittarius) and “Begin” (1968, by Millennium) proportions, lyrically and musically. The uniqueness and charm of the release is increased by the stripped down treatment of the vocals, which sound like voices of the best girls at their respective primary school – drowsing choir – and given a record deal, and it worked handsomely. If we compare with the superbly carried out the studio piloting backing up The Millennium, we will easily see that Curt Boettcher – the spiritual father of XTC’s Andy Partridge – was confirming his innovative ways of commanding recording knobs, facing this task as substantial part of the artistic direction, which became a kind of common sense in current rock-pop productions. With Wendy & Bonnie we have to take another vintage point. The release is the epitome of studio simplicity and technical straightforwardness, which more than often leads to utter crap, but not in “Genesis”. Wendy & Bonnie Flower knitted a masterpiece, and in the Palaeolithic way. In an era of hardcore industrial reproduction of works of art to which music is no exception, the album at stake sounds hand-made. A superior hymn to obsolescence, the way masterpieces mechanically produced should sound.

This is a very cool album. While it is definitely a late-'60s period piece, it's appeal is timeless.
The Flower sisters had a dark-angel harmony. Their moody take on the world is both innocently wide-eyed, yet wise beyond their tender years (17 and 13). The musicianship, by a soft-psychedelic stable of first-rate session players (guitarist Larry Carlton, drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist Mike Melvoin, etc.) under the guidance of lounge-jazz wizard Gary McFarland (Producer), is superb, adding colorful atmospherics and breezy Brazilian washes. This album was obscure -- the original record label went out of business shortly after the album came out in 1969 -- but it has had a deserved cult following for decades. Tim and Laetitia of Stereolab are known to be big fans (Tim called it "undeniably a great LP"), and it's obvious why -- Wendy and Bonnie had trail-blazed a similar musical path 25 years before. The voices are gentle, but never vapid. The arrangements are sophisticated, and the songcraft is solid. Genesis manages to avoid many of the cliches of late '60s SF psychedelia.

Warm Dust was one of those obscure progressive rock bands that slipped through the cracks, but released three albums. This was an early band featuring Paul Carrack before he earned his fame with Ace ("How Long"), Sqeeze ("Tempted"), and of course Mike & the Mechanics, not to mention the solo albums he did in the '80s. Now I understand the name Paul Carrack might make many of you run like hell, but what he's done in Warm Dust is nothing like those groups I mentioned.In 1970, they released their debut album And It Came to Pass, and like Chicago when they were still Chicago Transit Authority or the Mothers of Invention's Freak Out, is one of the rare examples of a double album debut. Aside from Paul Carrack, the group also featured vocalist/guitarist Dransfield "Les" Walker, John Surgey on wind instruments (flute, sax, oboe, clarinet), Alan Salomen on additional wind instruments, Terry "Tex" Comer on bass and guitars, and Dave Pepper on drums and percussion. Frequently this band was described as Chicago meets Caravan, but they really weren't a brass rock band like Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and such British counterparts as The Greatest Show on Earth or IF, but musically they could also bring to mind such groups. For one thing, Warm Dust wasn't really a horn rock band, but sax and flute, on top of Paul Carrack's Hammond organ was what made up this band's sound. If anything, they remind me a bit of Web/Samurai (Dave Lawson's bands prior to Greenslade that had a sound dominated by wind instruments)...
