This record is fascinating in so many ways that it would take too much space for my lowbrow writing abilities. Anyway, what really baffles me is how snobs and connoisseurs spend their life salibating at incredibly rare,hopelessly dull, "conazo" records while major label artists like David Stoughton, Bob Brown or Jonson himself are still undervalued by everyone (just google his name to check).
How odd!
It's good to know there are still records out there that thrill me the way they used to in my youth.

I own the CD reissue signed by Mark Johnson, aka Marc Jonson, of this enchanting record originally released on Vanguard Records in 1972 and now available on Radioghost as a special product.
This is a truly magic listening experience that reflects the very peculiar recording process if we are to believe Marc/Mark Jonson/Johnson himself: "I used left over harpsichords from classical sessions the night before. I hired string players and a string arranger. I even met a street player named Steven Gardner who played the recorder and set him to task on a long instrumental part of one of the songs. It was very ahead of its time in many ways"
Amazing, isn't it?
By the way, Mark Johnson later recorded three powerpop CDs that are must-haves, even for earlier fans of the folk-psych-pop music to be found on 'Years'.

- Fly on Strangewings was reissued on CD in 2007, with both sides of an unreleased 1971 single (on which John Wetton plays bass) added as bonus tracks.*

This little known UK Folk Rock classic released in the early '70s. Issued in England under the band name "Jade", it's a fantastic album featuring the Sandy Denny like vocals of Marian Segal. Orchestrated, melodic songs, powerful folk rock with electric guitar harpsichord, and soaring vocal harmonies, this has to be up in the top ten UK folk rock albums of the period.

Jade was one of the most popular UK folk/rock bands of the early 1970's. Folk duo Marianne Segal and Dave Waite toured the late' 60's folk clubs of the UK with the likes of Sandy Denny, The Strawberry Hill Boys (later the Strawbs) Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, The Dransfields, John Martyn, Ralph McTell and other such luminaries of the UK folk circuit. They signed to Dick James Music and under the guidance of producer Jon Miller became Jade, with the addition of keyboardist/bassist and arranger Rod Edwards. In 1970 they recorded their sole album and singles with a the help of a glittering array of talent including Pete Sears (Les Fleur De Lys, Sam Gopal's Dream, Jefferson Starship) John Wetton (King Crimson, Family) Terry Cox (Pentangle) Jimmy Litherland (Colosseum) Michael Rosen (Eclection, Fotheringay) Clem Cattini (Rumplestiltskin The Ivy League) Pete York (Spencer Davis Group, Hardin and York) and Mick Waller (Rod Stewart). "Fly On Strangewings" was released in 1970 under in both the UK and the USA - where it was issued under the name Mariannne Segal and Silver Jade. It received rave reviews and comparisons to Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. A short tour of the USA and UK plus appearances on Disco 2 (A forerunner of The Old Grey Whistle Test) were part of Jade's short but productive life, before internal pressures split the band in the summer of 1971. Now over 30 years later Jade's sole album is regarded as one of the best albums of the '70's UK folk rock movement. Unknown by many collectors it ranks along with The Trees' "On The Shore" and Mellow Candle's "Swaddling Songs" as one of the great underground albums of the era. Poorly promoted and tragically underexposed original UK copies of the album now sell for hundreds of pounds. While Jade's only album is decent early-'70s British folk-rock, its similarity to the material that Sandy Denny sang lead on with Fairport Convention is so evident that it's rather unnerving. Marian Segal sounded more like Denny than any other British folk-rock singer of the time did, and the songs mixed rock music, more traditional British Isles folk melodic and lyrical elements, and stirring contemporary singer-songwriter rock in much the same way that Fairport did in their WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAYS and UNHALFBRICKING era. The difference is that Jade had a little more of a pop influence than Fairport, occasionally using orchestration, and less of a traditional folk one at that. Of course, whereas Fairport split up the lead vocals among several members, Marian Segal takes almost all of them here, though the good amount of vocal harmonies, again, can't fail but to recall early Fairport.

It`s late 60s Brit-psych/pop of the McCartney/Roy Wood variety transplanted to 1970s Cincinnati, serving up plenty of innovation, fun and a fair amount of label $$$ on hand. Opens with dreamy psych mini-epic that recalls the 2nd Fallen Angels album, the rest holds a middle ground between London`68 and the clever pop that Ohio would become famous for, leaving the listener to decide if this is a late 60s lytepsych LP or in fact an Anglo-retro 70s trip. Lots of piano, "Penny Lane" fanfares, high-pitched teen harmonies and unexpected studio tricks. " Cincinnatti`s Jade were another one of those elusive early 70`s psychedelic acts who left behind only one private pressing before vanishing into the mist. Virtually nothing is known about the band, but collectors have been swarming record fairs and pillaging eBay for years in the hopes of snagging this relic. So does the album live up to its hype? Mostly, yes...
Considering the modest budget of such a DIY undertaking in 1970, the mix is well done and the material is very well constructed. Blending the Beatles, Blossom Toes and a number of other pop/psych acts of the era, Jade create a formidable aural tapestry. With slight folk leanings, each track breezes along quite nicely throughout the duration of the album. The engineering trickery in places here are subtle reminders that Jade were foremost Beatles influenced. Perhaps the strangest track is "My Mary" which is absolutely mindblowing. This ingenius piece of music features backwards accompaniment along with warped vocals that sound deceptively reversed but are actually sung forward. The outcome is like a bent merry-go-round, wobbling in circular motion while the seasick vocals spill out over the arrangement. It`s truly a sound to behold. The rest of the album is mostly just as satisfying and any lovers of quirky psych will find alot to enjoy in "Faces of Jade".

Jazz-rock with sax and vocals. Vivacious, hardly ever calm. The band from Marl released their only LP on the small label Menga, where the hard looked for LP from Think was released too. Taken from the master tapes.
Jazz-rock again? Yes, but the increasing number of tracks with jazz-rock on this sampler is only accidentally and not a trend. Join In were coming from Marl, a city situated in the Ruhr district area. They were founded in 1968 and changed their style of music quite often. They began with playing blues-rock, then changed to playing hard rock and ended up by playing jazz-rock in the seventies, each style containing progressive elements. Their only LP "Kentalope Island" was released in 1974 (Menga 3302). It is the same label where Think released, too. With Think they were not only in close contact but also exchanged their ideas concerning the music they wanted to play. Join In's CD was taken from the master tape and has as bonus eight not yet released tracks. In the booklet you can find, along with a lot of photos, valuable information about the band.

Originating from Marl (north of Essen) in 1968, and going through numerous changes over the years, first influenced by British rock and blues acts, Join In later moved ever more onto jazzy prog and fusion realms. Associates of Think, whose Ricky Ramor and Frank Voigt were amongst the many that passed through their ranks, Join In recorded their album at the same studio, with Eroc as engineer.KENTALOPE ISLAND is a pleasant record, with some slight Think references, but much more fusion, mixing jazzy musics with soft rock and prog elements typical of the era, comparable to many others: Guru Guru circa GLOBETROTTER, Cry Freedom, or Dutch acts like Alquin or Solution. For those that like such things, it's a good example of the genre, and all the better on the CD which includes some much stronger (if of not brilliant recording quality) material, where they live up to the band name much more, with some tasty jamming instrumental work.

Singer, guitarist, and drummer Gordon Jackson released a rare album for the Marmalade label in 1969, Thinking Back, that bore much similarity to records of the era by Traffic and (more distantly) Family. The resemblance wasn't casual, as several members of Traffic and Family helped out on the record, alongside other notables like Julie Driscoll and Luther Grosvenor of Spooky Tooth; Traffic's Dave Mason, in fact, was the producer. Thinking Back had the same sort of loose mixture of psychedelic rock with jazz, folk, and bits of soul and world music that characterized some of Traffic's work. The material wasn't as strong or focused as Traffic's or Family's, but it had a nice introspective groove with haunting, minor-keyed melodies.

Prior to the album, Jackson had been intimately connected with musicians in bands that evolved into Traffic, Family, and Spooky Tooth, although he never attained anything near the same recognition as those groups in his brief solo career. He'd been in the Hellions, the Birmingham group also including Mason, Grosvenor, and future Traffic percussionist Jim Capaldi, who made some flop singles for Piccadilly in the mid-1960s. After the Hellions broke up, Jackson played in Deep Feeling with Capaldi, Grosvenor, and future Family multi-instrumentalist Poli Palmer. Deep Feeling, unfortunately, never released anything, although an excellent early psychedelic track they recorded, "Pretty Colours," did eventually get released on Grosvenor's Floodgates Anthology. Jackson was an odd man out, though, when Mason and Capaldi helped form Traffic, and little was heard from him after the 1960s despite the promise of Thinking Back.

Gordon Jackson's only album sounds a little like a Traffic LP with a singer who isn't in the band. The similarity is really no surprise, since Traffic men Steve Winwood, Dave Mason, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood all played on the record, and Mason produced. Other notables with connections to the Traffic family tree or Marmalade label also appeared, including Luther Grosvenor; Rick Grech, Jim King, and Poli Palmer of Family; and Julie Driscoll. There's a languid, minor keyed jazz-folk-psychedelic vibe to the songs, which have a meditative, spontaneously pensive air, appealingly sung by Jackson. Touches of Indian and African music are added by occasional tabla and sitar. What keeps this from being as memorable as Traffic or some of the other better late-'60s British psychedelic acts is a certain meandering looseness to the songs that, while quite pleasant, lacks concision and focus. That was a quality also heard in the album from the same era by fellow Marmalade artist Gary Farr, Take Something With You, and while Thinking Back is better and more original than Farr's effort, the songs are more interesting mood pieces with a yearning, mystic tone than they are outstanding compositions. At times this is like hearing psychedelic sea shanties (as on "My Ship, My Star"), such is the lilt of the tunes, though hints of blues and more playful pop-psych whimsy are heard in cuts like "Me and My Dog." [The 2005 CD reissue on Sunbeam adds lengthy historical liner notes and five bonus tracks, including the non-LP B-side "A Day at the Cottage"; a haunting, sparse home demo of "My Ship, My Star"; single mixes of "Song for Freedom" and "Sing to Me Woman"; and a long version of "Me and My Dog."]

History:
Osamu was already a successful composer of TV and advertising jingles, when a move to the UK in 1971 brought him in to contact with British folk and psychedelic rock. Inspired in particular by The Beatles, Tyrannousaurus Rex and Syd Barrett, he dubbed himself "Justin Heathcliff" (picked for its English-sounding quality) and issued his lone eponymous album. Released only in Japan, the album became highly prized in collector's circles for its good-natured idiosyncrasy and casual melodicism. Justin Heathcliff began to receive wider interest in the West when the track "You Know What I Mean" was featured on the Asian volume of the Love, Peace, and Poetry compilation series in 1999, and has since been reissued on CD. After releasing the album, Osamu dropped the moniker, and has continued to work under his own name. Now associated more closely with New Age music than pop, he currently resides and works in Los Angeles.

Long before attaining fame as a soundtrack composer and new age artist, Osamu Kitajima adopted a sufficiently Anglo pseudonym and released this amazing homage to British pop-psychedelia in 1971. Issued by Warner Bros. in Japan only, the LP has unsurprisingly climbed skywards in price ever since, and only a cave dweller could miss the faithful nods to Syd, Marc, John, Paul, George and Ringo in the original compositions and English lyrics. Another of these ultra rare privately-pressed albums, this was one of the rarest released on the Wakefield-based Holyground label but was recorded by a local college band. Only 99 copies were pressed and according to 'Record Collector', it begins with a couple of dull folk instrumentals before going through some wholly unexpected and bizarre changes; long before the end it becomes completely uncategorisable
Originally released on the fabled Holyground label - and recorded in 1971 by students who later went on to work with Bill Nelson and other Holyground acts - only 99 copies of this album were made. Consequently this reissue will be much sought after by collectors. Mixing elements of folk and jazz into a progressive and sometime psychedelic stew, this is an interesting release that lives up to its reputation.

The American Metaphysical Circus is a landmark psychedelic recording of the late 1960's, largely unparalleled in having remained in print for nearly 20 years. It was recorded by Joseph "Joe" Byrd after his departure from the band The United States Of America, and featured some of the earliest recorded work in rock music utilizing extensive use of synthesizers and vocoder, along with an extended group of West Coast studio musicians he named as Joe Byrd and the

Field Hippies.

It has become a popular and oft-repeated misconception, with the more recent revival of interest in The United States of America, that The American Metaphysical Circus was not as popular or a commercial success, whereas factual information discussed by Byrd surrounding the Napster case and the experience of American record enthusiasts confirms exactly the opposite.

Prior to its re-release, mint vinyl copies of The American Metaphysical Circus were sold by collectors for prices sometimes in excess of $100US, and the both the original 1969 issue and 1996 CD still command premium prices on collector Web sites. Atlantis Records described the 1999 re-release as "sought after 60's American Psych/Electronic rock classic from United States of American mainman Joseph Byrd" . Gatefold Records offered "Welcome re-issue of the 1969 followup to the United States of America album (Joe Byrd was the leader of that group). Trippy Moog and electronics noodling mixed with stunning bursts of fuzzed out guitars and acid-damaged lyrics"...
