...The a-side here is late-nite loungey 70s SSW fare with a jazzy/funky flare done to perfection. in some strange time-space filter it comes out sounding vividly real vs. dated/cheesy. He lets the tracks really drift... i haven't heard alot of stuff like this. Side 2 is a bit folkier - A Friend of Mine / Hanging Around Waiting are both shorter songs in a Dylan-ish angry folk mold and kinda of break the spell you're under after the stoney looseness that leads up to it. He gets back to it on "Other Realities" and "Drummers Lament" and over-all its a pretty spooky record. The guy is definitely a head, and definitely a weird cat and I really dig where he took this ethereal midnight spaced lounge jazz stuff. Like Justen O'Brien + Jake it quickly becomes a much heavier record than you had initially imagined... Toni, the gal vocalist is fabulously cool and lets notes go flat and plays it stoned natural realness. Like tripping with your middle aged neighbor after he's been through a divorce. Mature and sensitive but still pretty weird.... Most unusual and relaxed but twilight zone mix of smooth but not slick lounge jazzy sounds with off key at times vocal, female voice weaving through, cool organ that gets mystical, the opening track "Fear Of Flying: is particularly eerie. Like a soak in a surreal hot tub. Private pressing on Gargoyle records from Canada. Mentioned in Acid Archives.

Unlike previous efforts to 'do an English version' (PFM, Kraftwerk), Lonely Land works very well indeed, with Dimle and Nordberg's lyrics translating well, assuming they are straight translations; some of the titles certainly are. Aside from the slightly brighter sound, the album is very similar to Riktigt Äkta, to be honest, although the English lyrics put a different slant on the material for the English-speaker. The other chief difference between the two versions is the excellent cover of T2's No More White Horses, complete with the Mellotron missing from the original. The bonus track on the Riktigt Äkta CD, Tillbaka (a cover, apparently, though I don't know of whom), hasn't been re-recorded, so you really need both of these.

The first Landberk album for me has great significance for a 'cover song'. Track 5 "No More White Horses" is a cover of Peter Dunton's song which was recorded by T2 in 1970 (Original (Short) version by Please in 1968). Not that this is the only song of note on this album.
On the debut album "Lonely Land" these guys almost openly recreate the sound of the '70s, actively and effectively using such famous (and popular) keyboard instrument as Mellotron (The Keeper of the string samples). A lot of acoustic piano, and some songs feature even accordion.
Cold, Northern music with slow dramatic themes and quite complex arrangements slightly influenced by such bands as Van Der Graaf and PFM. Keyboards play a prominent role here, though often you can hear excellent sad guitar solos.
If you haven't heard the T2 "It'll All Work Out In Boomland" version and want to - Check out the post on this blog (if the link is down I will post it again for you) it has blistering Guitar work from the (then 17 year old) Keith Cross.
Please note this is the English version of "Riktigt Akta" which is their Swedish first album in 1992.
The music here is pretty simple (especially harmonically speaking), it creates a nice, melancholy mood using mellotron, flute, and guitar to good effect. Vocals for the most part are quite laid-back, fitting the slow, plodding mood of the disc. Guitar solos form the only real breaks from the broodingness of the music, and even those are somewhat cold: either chilly acoustic work (a la Robert Fripp's acoustic runs in "Cirkus" from Lizard) or a dirty, tortured tone from the electric guitar. Few specific influences come to mind, though there are definite similarities to early King Crimson, certain Anglagard passages (it's worth noting, though, that Riktigt Akta was released before any Anglagard albums), quieter Anekdoten pieces, and perhaps the more mellow compositions out of 1970s Italy. While I am told that later albums by this band begin to steer closer to pop-prog territory, this is a worthy release for fans of Scandinavian prog that don't mind a lack of harmonic activity.

Their first album was originally released in its Swedish-language version, Riktigt Äkta, which they re-recorded in English as Lonely Land. These appear to be two entirely different recordings; the Swedish version plays flatter and has a rawer sound than the English, and both albums have different bonus tracks, making them both essential for the aficionado. I Nattens Timma/Waltz Of The Dark Riddle is something of a 'Tron classic; Mellotron flute (underpinned with cello) and vocal, with the 'Tron (played by Simon Nordberg, incidentally) switching to strings halfway through each verse, coupled with a haunting melody that could only be Scandinavian. The rest of the album carries on in a similar vein, although there are a couple of slightly more upbeat numbers; Landberk were nothing if not melancholy, to the point where they made their aforementioned contemporaries sound like quintessential party bands. Well, nearly. There are too many highlights to name, but the 'Tron strings on Undrar Om Ni Ser
(redolent of Crimso's Epitaph) are really quite superb. One of the band's strengths was not overusing the 'Tron, although it would've been far too easy to have smothered the whole thing in it. Admirable restraint, and a great album.

Nowadays, the Scandinavian scene sets the patterns between melancholy and tragedy within the realms of progressive rock. "Riktigt Äkta" is a rare composition, so human, so dark that evokes the deepest feelings you've been holding inside and will take you to the point where you can be exposed to the real essence of this symphonic masterpiece. Many Swedish bands are out there on the spotlight standing still to the inclemency of top prog bands, but its projection is greater than its anonymity. That'd be the particular case of ANEKDOTEN, which combined its talent with some of the skillful musicians of LANDBERK to produce in 1998 the ultimate instrumental progressive piece, "Symphonic Holocaust". The band commanded by Patrik HELJE on vocals, reached vertiginously its peak with debut album "Riktigt Äkta", making the rest of the LANDBERK experience worthwhile. Disbanded in 1996 right after "Indian Summer", the formula reinvented by the Swedish band will remain still no matter what musical changes or progressive tendencies.
Definitely, one of the best albums released in the early nineties. Get to know this proposing and enigmatic band, you'll be enchanted. No more to say.

Songwriter Dennis Linde remained a fixture of the country charts for decades, penning blockbusters for everyone from Elvis Presley to the Dixie Chicks. Born March 18, 1943, in Abilene, TX, Linde spent much of his adolescence in St. Louis, first picking up the guitar at the age of 15. During the late '60s, he played in the St. Louis band the Starlighters, driving a dry-cleaning delivery truck by day. When speeding tickets cost him his license and his day job, Linde turned to songwriting, relocating to Nashville in 1969 to join the Combine Music staff (which also included Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Newbury, and Wanda Jackson). Linde scored his first major hit a year later when Roy Drusky cut his "Long Long Texas Road." He also signed a solo deal with Mercury's Intrepid imprint, issuing his debut effort, Linde Manor.
In 1972, Elvis scored his final number one hit with "Burning Love," launching Linde to the forefront of Nashville songwriters. The attention earned him a deal with Elektra, which released his self-titled sophomore record in 1973. Trapped in the Suburbs appeared on the label's Asylum subsidiary the following year, and in 1978 Linde signed to Monument to release his fourth and final solo disc, Under the Eye. He continued his commercial success during the mid-'80s, writing hits for Kenny Rogers ("Goodbye, Marie"), Gary Morris ("The Love She Found in Me"), Don Williams ("Walkin' a Broken Heart"), and Eddy Raven ("I'm Gonna Get You").

However, Linde's finest work emerged during the following decade, when he unleashed his mordant wit on songs for Mark Chesnutt ("Bubba Shot the Jukebox"), Joe Diffie ("John Deere Green"), and Shenandoah ("Janie Baker's Love Slave") -- in 1993, he was named the Nashville Songwriter Association's Songwriter of the Year, and in 1994 earned BMI's Songwriter the Year honors.
Linde made national headlines in 2000 when the Dixie Chicks scored with his bleakly witty "Goodbye Earl," the controversial tale of an abusive husband killed by his long-suffering wife. He returned to the upper reaches of the country charts in 2005 with Alan Jackson's "The Talkin' Song Repair Blues."

Drummer Johnny Betti left Circus 2000 in 1972, having played on their debut album, following some contrasts with the rest of the band. He had a jazz background, having even spent some years playing with foreign jazz musicians touring Europe, so he briefly returned to his jazz roots before leaving in Afghanistan for a year.
He reappeared in 1975 with his new band Living Life, also based in Turin and recording for his own newly created Shirak label. The former Circus 2000 guitarist "Spooky" Quartarone was also involved in the Living Life original line-up. 
Their debut album, Let: from experience to experience, the first LP release by Shirak, is a fragmented blend of jazz, rock and ethnic music, mostly instrumental with just an English-sung vocal track.
No musician names are present on the sleeve, though seven of them are pictured, and all the tracks are penned by an N.Tibet (that appears to be Betti under a fake name).
The second one, Mysterious dream, came after a six years break;  the group had a new line-up with Betti and bassist Savarro as the only remaining founder members, and some help from original keyboardist Piercarlo Bettini (now known as Swami Zekuta, he had been with I Ragazzi del Sole in the 60's), replaced by Aldo Valente during the recording session.
The five-track LP was totally composed by Johnny Betti and in a more original style than their debut, again with jazz-rock influences but more keyboards-based (no less than four keyboard player are involved) and with good vocal parts like in the 11 minute long title-track, Mysterious dream.
The group disbanded again due to the lack of attention, like many other acts on the small Shirak label(some good folk bands like La Lionetta).

It is fitting that the first of Scott Smith's home-brewed progressive psych-folk to be officially released is "Music for the Third Ear" because it comprehensively showcases Smith's playing and writing skills, both solo and with collaborators. His compositions have the timeless fluidity and musicality of the twilight period of UK psychedelic pop, around about the time when fairground trip-scapes were giving way to the expansive fields of early progressive rock. His vocals, whether straight or multi-tracked into divine choruses, have something of the quality of the early Robert Wyatt. "Third Ear" bursts with invention and surprising twists, from the short introductory instrumental redolent of Soft Machine, to lilting folk-rock like the "Being Alive" (recalling the legendary folkies Fresh Maggots with its acidic burst of electric lead guitar), and the intricate and dynamic "Alone We Go", on which Scott is assisted by friends to expand the instrumental palette - the duel between electric guitar and sitar at the conclusion of this track is worth the price of admission alone. Cosmic themes are micro-dotted throughout as the titles suggest - "We Have Come From the Earth", "Beyond a Star", and the stunning "Watcher of the Skies". This is definitely a CD for lovers of new folk by artists such as Greg Weeks, P.G. Six, Tower Recordings, Pothole Skinny and Six Organs of Admittance. (It's could even be said that these 2000 recordings were somewhat ahead of the game.)

Scott Smith, the one-man operation behind the moniker Lifesmyth, already had four home-brewed albums under his belt when Music for the Third Ear became his first official release. Concocted and privately released on CD-R in 2000, this album showcases Smith as a storyteller. Between "Approaching" and "Last Chance," the first and last tracks, he sketches the journey of a lifetime -- from birth to death -- and ties it with a cosmic/extraterrestrial theme that gives the album its psychedelic feel. The drums, alternately programmed or stiff, trap the music inside too cold a cage; it deserved to be warmer, looser at the ground level. Keyboards, guitar (electric and acoustic), sitar, and mandolin form the main instrumentation, along with Smith's low, dreamy vocals. The odd dynamic shifts recall some of the artists revolving around the American underground avant psych-folk scene (Tower Recordings, Sunburned Hand of the Man), although Lifesmyth's songs are always more defined and somehow straightforward. It is their grouping into what can only be called a concept album that produces such a strange, destabilizing atmosphere. The D.I.Y. production means that most listeners will find half of the tracks endearing and the other half annoying, but no two persons will separate them the same way or for the same reasons. Composition-wise, Music for the Third Ear is an intriguing proposal. If Smith can find a few good, likeminded musicians to straighten up the performance, he'll become an addictive fellow.

Logan Dwight formed in 1972, and in their brief career they released an album and a single.
The album opens with a very nice piece entitled, "Logan Dwight", which showcases the flute and

History:
A band that only released an album and a single on the PDU label, along with Cincinnato this was one of the very few rock and prog releases by a label not so interested in these musical styles.
The trio composed by singer Donatella Luttazzi and guitarists Mereu and Ventura was formed in Rome in 1970, and under the name Genesi was signed to RCA subsidiary Delta, that gave them the chance to record some tracks for an album.
The three musicians were helped by bass player Claudio Barbera along with some experienced Scottish sessionmen who were then living in Rome, singer Alex Ligertwood (from Camel), keyboardist Mike Fraser and drummer Derek Wilson.
Their style was a R&B-tinged rock, and even organist Brian Auger, who was often in Italy, was so impressed by the band, that he offered singer Ligertwood the singer role in his new band Oblivion Express, and Genesi disbanded.
A new contract was found with the PDU label, and a new line up with singer Federico D'Andrea (previously appearing on singles by Manuel De Sica & gli Ancients, and Myosotis) was formed, the band being helped by drummer Jean Paul Ceccarelli and various studio guest musicians, including keyboardist Toto Torquati.
Their only album was released in 1972, sung in English and with the dual male-female voice interplay of Donatella Luttazzi and Federico D'Andrea, but also including three tracks (on a total of seven) taken from the 1970 sessions with the old Genesi line-up fronted by Alex Ligertwood. For this reason, the album is rather fragmented and not particularly original, bearing a strong resemblance of foreign models, especially some American mainstream rock, and is marred by orchestral arrangements in some tracks.
A good opening track, named Logan Dwight, was also released as a single, coupled with the orchestrated Moments of eternity.
After the band split, singer/guitarist Federico D'Andrea formed Libra.

Lizard is one of the forgotten progressive rock bands from Australia from early '70's . Releasing one album at Harvest in 1973 named Bad Companions, they didn't get much attention, and because of that soon they disbanded, even in the band were great and talented musicians . It's a very rare album, hard to get in original form - vinyl, I have a CD-R with the album from a friend of mine who were kind enough to make me a copy from the original vinyl, he didn't want to sell it. The album so far, from my knowledge didn't get a re issues, maybe in the future someone will think about this band and give a proper CD release. Some members from Lizard were earlier in another good band from late '60's White Wine and the sax player Dave Connors will play with one of the most famous british psychedelic - space prog from the '70's - Jade Warrior. The music is progressive rock with some blues and jazz moments, just a fiew but they are, given a certain atmosphere of the album. In some parts the album sounds a bit to experimental side with killer guitars and absolute stunning sax playing, some times they remind me in places of King Crimson or same jazz bands from mid '70's. The voice of Mich Tulk is very ok fiting very well in the album, aswell the rest of the musicians are very talented. The killer piece is Page Missing From My Book, mindblowing guitar leads and fabulous sax interplaying with the rest, the rest are ok. Now, I'm not saying that this is a masterpiece of this genre, but is filled with good pieces and excellent musicianship. One of the rare and forgotten progressive rock bands coming from the land of canguroo.3.5 for Bad companions, good towards great but not an essential album. Good art work, specially the back cover looking like a page from a newspapper.

Another one album band, Lizard was one of EMIs Harvest label Australian signings. Bad Companions is a very rare album full of 70s progressive jazz rock.A five piece band, three of Lizards members were earlier in White Wine. Prior to Lizard, sax player Dave Connors also appeared in Jade Warrior (UK) and later went to work with Graham Parker and the Rumour.There are moments on Bad Companions that remind me of Company Caine so it no surprise to learn that both Connors and guitarist/vocalist Mike Tulk also sessioned on Gulliver Smith's solo album.

Andrew Leigh was bass player and sung harmonies with Matthews Southern Comfort, Iain Matthews’ band. Leigh appeared on the two ‘band’ albums, ‘Second Spring’ and ‘Later That Same Year’. After Matthews left the band, they continued as Southern Comfort, producing three albums. The first of these, ‘Frog City’, has a version of Leigh’s ‘The Leaving Song’. Frog City is the nearest album to ‘Magician’ in style.

The Love Exchange were a typical support-level Los Angeles band of the psychedelic era, right down to their name. Their chief claim to fame, such as it is, is their 1967 single "Swallow the Sun," a nice folk-rock-psychedelic tune that's emblematic of the time with its trippily optimistic lyrics, garage-like Mamas & the Papas female-male harmonies, and swirling organ. The record was anthologized on the Los Angeles portion of the Highs in the Mid Sixties series, and also on the folk-rock volume of the vinyl Nuggets series on Rhino in the 1980s. They also managed to put out an LP in 1968 that, in addition to featuring "Swallow the Sun," had an assortment of minor-league psych-folk-pop crossover efforts, few of them written by the band. "Swallow the Sun," incidentally, is a cover of song by the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, "Dark on You Now," with some different lyrics. The Love Exchange grew out of some teenage surf and garage bands in the Los Angeles suburb of Westchester. It was teenage singer Bonnie Blunt who was the group's strongest asset, giving them the competent vocals in the soaring, folky Mamas & the Papas/early Jefferson Airplane style. (As an interesting trivial note, the first woman singer in the Love Exchange was Laura Hale, daughter of actorAlan Hale, famous as the skipper on Gilligan's Island.) They weren't good writers, though, and on their sole album, much of the material was penned by producer Larry Goldberg. These were pretty shallow garage-psych-folk-rock efforts with their utopian rose-colored lyrics and organ-modal-guitar combinations, like a minor league Peanut Butter Conspiracy (who weren't such major talents themselves). The aura of psychsploitation was enhanced when Goldberg took some of the LP's backing tracks and added vocals by non-group members to create a Christian rock album credited to the Crusaders. Some of the album's songs were also used on a soundtrack album for a musical titled How Now, Dow Jones, credited there to the Floor Traders. And, finally, the songs did come out in their original form on an LP actually billed as a Love Exchange record, as it should have been all along. None of this helped the Love Exchange gain much credibility, although they played often in Los Angeles and at some festivals. In keeping with their general lack of consistent packaging, their name was changed to Charity in the late '60s for an album on Uni, although as it ended up organist Walter Flannery was the only member who performed on that LP. They were still performing as the Love Exchange live at that point, but broke up after appearing at the Newport '69 Pop Festival in Southern California.

Offering up a mixture of originals and popular covers (Bob Dylan, The Troggs, The Who), musically the set wasn't particularly original. With the band credited with half the material, tracks such as 'The Sky That Is Blue', 'Zepplin's Good Friday' and 'Yesterday's Child' showcased a tasty blend of tight, Beatlesque harmonies and surprisingly commercial melodies. It wasn't perfect with the band occasionally drifting too close to Mamas & Papas-styled MOR ('Gigi'). Far more impressive were the band's stabs at a harder rock sound, including the fuzz guitar and feedback propelled 'Where Oh Where Is Mother' and their vox-powered cover of Dylan's 'Baby Blue'; always liked the song's sitar fadeout. All told, the results weren't half bad; an album I pull out from time to time.

The non-LP 45 track "Portrait Of Youth" is an excellent track, other than that I'm not a great fan of this outfit. The LP has covers of the Who, Troggs, Dylan and more. The band had an earlier local 45 as the Obvious on the Cheetah label. The band is often linked to Dragonfly, but we've been unable to find any obvious connection except the "Portrait" track and the label.

From Boston and rated highly by some, this album includes some fine guitar and organ work on cuts like Baby: Where Are You?. Still an undiscovered gem this is worth searching out. Most of the vocals were performed by drummer Ernie Kamanis, and Peter Malick who was 16 at the time the album was recorded. Walter Powers had previously been in the famed punk band The Lost. A reworked version of the album's opener, Michael Tschudin's You're Not There, appears on the highly-touted album ...Setting Forth... Improvising Against The Future by Odyssey. Michael Tschudin later played with Cynara and produced the Fort Mudge Memorial Dump album. He became a session man and producer during the seventies, notably working with Tim Curry. Peter Malick played with the James Montgomery Band and is is still active, fronting his own Peter Malick Band playing blues / R&B influenced music in/around Boston. Walter Powers teamed up with his old Lost companion Willie "Loco" Alexander in the final incarnation of The Velvet Underground. The uplifting baroque-pop of Hello You can be found on Bring Flowers To U.S. (LP), whilst one track from the album, Stoned Is has also resurfaced on Marijuana Unknowns (LP & CD).

A highly-rated beat / R'n'B / folk-rock outfit from Chile. Originally known as Los Cuervos (The Crows), three quarters of the band met whilst studying law at the Catholic University in Santiago and discovered a common love of bands such as The Beatles, Kinks, Yardbirds and The Byrds. At their first gig as Los Vidrios Quebrados in 1965, at the University, they played just three songs, but these were sufficient to win them a record contract with Emilio Rojas' Odeon label. After the Friend and She'll Never Know I'm Blue single, in 1966, they recorded their sole album Fictions in 1967. This was recorded in two nights on only three channels and spans Byrds'-influenced chiming folk-rock, to Yardbirds-influenced R'n'B material. The original release came with a four-page lyric booklet which is now hard to find. All twelve tracks were originals and overall a very consistent standard was achieved - with the catchy title track the pick of the bunch. All their recordings were made with mostly home-made instruments and/or amplifiers, creating everything from scratch using furniture, record player cartridges for pick-ups, bottle-caps for tambourine parts and loud speakers - the only "bought" item being a Gretsch pick-up! Although the band never recorded any cover versions, they considered that rock 'n' roll could only be sung in English and refused to sing in their native language, arguing that a cueca (the Chilean national dance) could not be sung in English. Their baroque approach also helped introduce them to a wider audience, including classical radio, whilst at T.V. appearances, where they were required to lip-sync, Juan Enrique would on occassion play the drums with flowers whilst the band would sing phrases not in the audio mix. Locally, they were so successful that, in 1967, they went to Europe to attempt to make it big. However, they soon went their separate ways.(taken from "Dreams, Fantasies & Nightmares")

Led by singer Fred Cole, who had formerly been in the Northwest punk band the Weeds, the Lollipop Shoppe's sole album (from 1968) ranks as one of the better psych-punk LPs, and also as one of the better one-shot rock records of the late '60s. Featuring Cole's choked, bitter phrasing, the group staked out the middle ground between the Seeds (who shared the same manager) and Love, with a bit of fellow L.A. psych-punkers the Music Machine thrown in. If comparisons must be made, they were definitely closer in tone to Love than the Seeds, with a mixture of raunch and reflection in the spirit of Arthur Lee. Cole was one of the few psychedelic performers to make a contribution during the punk era, surfacing in the Portland punk band the Rats in the late '70s.

The Lollipop Shoppe were a 1960s psychedelic garage rock band.They were originally known as The Weeds and featured Fred Cole, now of Dead Moon. After The Weeds signed to UNI Records (a now-defunct subsidiary of MCA), their new manager, "Lord" Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bubblegum music. The band's actual recordings, including the 1968 LP Just Colour, are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of garage rock and psychedelia. The album and its single, "You Must Be a Witch," are regarded as period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. The album has been bootlegged; the Music Maniac label has announced a reissue but it has not appeared. The Lollipop Shoppe released one more single, "Someone I Knew" b/w "Through My Window", before breaking up in 1969. They reunited as The Weeds for a 1971 single.
