German folk rock that mainly consist of acoustic guitar, violin, and percussion. This is very "American" sounding singer/songwriter stuff with pleasant English vocals. Do NOT expect something that sounds like Brosselmachine, or like Emtidi, or like Witthueser & Westrupp, because This is not really "psychedelic", or "cosmic" at all (even though it is often passed off as progressive folk, or acid folk). With all that being said, there are plenty of very good passages with excellent violin. The strongest material is towards the end, when the music does get a little more progressive at times, with some excellent guitar, beautiful choral arrangements (played on a keyboard choir setting) and extended violin jamming. All-in-all, a pleasant listen, but one can tell why it is not quite up there with the classics of the German folk rock scene of the 70's.

NOTE: There are rumors that these guys were not German at all, but Canadians living in Germany. That would explain their good English vocals, and more American sound

The name of this group comes from the first components blocks: RONNIE DI TOMASO (guitar, voice) and THEO BUSCH (violin, percussions). With their friend YEDZ they recorded this good LP in Germany in 1976... it's fresh folk rock, sung in English, and as usual many sellers consider it as psychedelic folk rock (maybe to sell it at a better price), anyway this is another little jewel coming from Germany and its value is growing day by day (400 US Dollars)... the gatefold cover is also great with a beautiful fantasy design... This German band brings a surprising well crafted USA or British folk rock, or German why not?.
Voice of singer Ronnie di Tomaso add lots to the general pleasant ambience created by this musicians, emotive and inspired singing.
There are beautifully arranged song like the instrumental By the Side of a Clear Crystal Fountain where violin plays a principal role.
In general this almost unknown band, which falls into the never ending genre of "obscure bands", brings a delicate folk rock, pleasant and appealing.
Bravo Mr. di Tomaso and Busch, Ron Theo, unfortunately by the year this album was recorded (1976) nobody catch their wonderful project.

Thoroughly amazing psych-acid-folk from early 70s. Roy Rutanen hailed from New Zealand.
This album was recorded in Australia and released on MCA through Astor Records. Lots of acoustic and fuzz guitar and flute. As rare as dodo droppings, copies have sold from AU$610 to AU$1,500.

Riff Raff was a UK progressive rock band formed by keyboardist Tommy Eyre in 1972.The band was a continuation on the back of drummers (and Harrow School of Art friends) Rod Coombes (Juicy Lucy Strawbs and Stealers Wheel) and Joe Czarnecki's (Plainsmen) aka Joe Peter's project originally called 'Crikey' started in 1969 and completed in 1970 when Rod had to accept growing tour commitments with Juicy Lucy.These sessions comprise half of the Riff Raff album 'Outside Looking In' in which Rod wrote half the songs.Rod says that "the concept of the band was based around two drummers and afro-jazz (Rod and Joe were great fans of Ginger Baker and Miles Davis) and fusion(this album was one of the first true fusion albums to be recorded).I had worked with Roger with singer Paul Williams (Juicy Lucy)and Tommy previously and clearly we all enjoyed doing what we do best-playing freely".
Riff Raff later went on to release two albums to lukewarm response; however, their use of jazz and hard-edged rock garnered them a large underground following. Riff Raff also released the single "Copper Kettle". Although not typical of Riff Raff's repertoire, the band were unlucky not to get some chart coverage from the single.[citation needed]

Riff Raff came together almost as a natural consequence of the member’s different paths crossing each others at times.
While the Eyre and Sutton pair where working with Mark-Almond progressive duet, they had the time to record an album with Alan Marshall (future Zzebra) and drummer Rod Coombes (future Strawbs), but Mark-Almond became successful in America, so their project (then-named Strabismus) got put on hold. There are also bonus tracks from a recording session of the future incarnation of Riff Raff, with Kirtley, De Souza (and second drummer Kenny Slade).
All tracks (including, bizarrely, the bonus tracks) are written by bassist Sutton and drummer Coombes self-produced, this album is much rockier than the next two Riff Raff albums, and the opening title track is certainly a lengthy energetic number, rather contrasting with its (also length) follow-up Blind Man with its choral middle-section (recorded in the Guilford cathedral).
The Bach piece is much in the line of Blind Man. The side ends with an ultra-short Paranoia (musically-linked to the previous track). Since this album never came out under the vinyl format, it is relatively hard to tell which track would’ve been on which side since Buthelezi is also linked to Paranoiac (and therefore to the Bach piece), but it quickly develops into a drum solo. So far, this unreleased album has reserved us a few surprises, being much more classically-influenced than the next two Riff Raff albums. A bluesier (almost 11-min) To Be Free is certainly still enjoyable.
As for the bonus tracks supposed to be making the link from this unreleased album to the next one, not much is specified as to when the sessions took place, who was still in the group (three drummers for the whole album and two for the bonus tracks). “Child of the summer” is a very nice jazz-laced with soul vocals really announcing the eponymous album and is a small gem, Morning being a bit soul-folk-like, but allowing for instrumental interplay (a good flute-guitar duet), while the 7-min The Garden is a reflective piece offering peaceful ballad-like ambiances.
This “debut” album is rather different-sounding to the classic Riff Raff and is more for the hardcore fans, but still offers a few interesting moments. The bonus tracks are of a bit more interest as they really represent the Riff Raff genesis.

Nice minneapolis private press that sounds earlier then the “78 release date. quite solid laidback psych jamming with a distinct DEAD vibe, nice organs, great guitar, and sweet obscure palm tree cover art. Still pretty underrated, but gaining interest (and rarity) quickly.

One of those albums that’s known almost exlusively in collector’s circles. Despite the 1978 recording date, this is wasted late 60s/early 70s-style guitar rock in a West Coast bag. The guitar playing is pretty good and the songs have hooks buried here and there. An album that makes you feel like you’ve wandered into a swamp by mistake, but the water is warm and comfortable.

A little bit of groovy swamp music for y'all now. "First Rays" by "Ray Harlowe & Gyp Fox" is a mega rarity folks. This is an American Private Pressing released on the Waterwheel Label. It has featured on an unnamed blog's wishlist for as long as I have been blogging. Up until recently I had five out of the nine tracks. Now I got them all. I also posted "Cecilio & Kapono" album "Night Music" first, a while ago that was also on their wishlist. Just coz I dropped my affiliation with them for various reasons, it doesn't mean that I won't give them what they ultimately want. But I will post them before they find them right. And they will still continue to write nasty things about me on their blog. For the rest of you who all know the problems I have had with this blogger, make sure to REALLY enjoy this. The first time I heard this Winona, Minnesota-based outfit I mistook them for the mid-1970s Dead.  ‘Course I’d had a couple of beers that evening, but the lazy, stoned communal vibe, the Garcia-styled twangy guitar, the Pulitzer Prize winning lyrics (just kidding), all had me wondering which Dead album I was hearing.  So let that be a warning to any of you expecting to hear a much hyped psych treasure …   Written and produced by namesake singer/guitarist Harlowe, 1978’s “First Ray” was apparently a vanity project released on the band’s own Minneapolis-based Waterwheel imprint.  Judging by these nine tracks, Harlowe and company weren’t the most accomplished band you’ve ever heard. As lead singer Harlowe had a decent, if limited and occasionally out of tune voice (check out his performance on ‘Cryin’ Shame’), while the band (including three guitarists) were competent, if seldom awe inspiring.  In spite of the obvious Dead-influence, the album was actually quite diverse with ‘Earthy Delights’ and ‘Cryin’ Shame’ featuring modestly discordant jazzy feels (maybe it was just too many drugs), ’My Lucky Star’ found the group taking a stab at country-rock, ‘Some Sweet Day’ was an attempt at being commercial (I’m using a broad definition here), and ‘Danny’s Blues’ offered up an entertaining set of stoned bar band blues before degenerating into a weird Allmans-styled jam segment where each member appeared to be playing a different tune. Technically labeling this an aural disaster wouldn’t be that far off.  Ironically, while that description wouldn’t exactly be a ringing endorsement, the band’s earnest, if highly stoned approach tended to grow on you.  After a couple of spins you became acclimated to the set’s low-keyed, amateurish charm.  Imagine your teenager playing in a local band (hopefully not as chemically impaired) and you’ll get a feeling as to what to expect.  Standout track in terms of material, stoned effects and performance was the rocking closer ‘Getting Keyed’.   Bet they were fun to see in a small club…  
Hopefully someone else out there can explain the connection …  I originally thought ‘Gyp Fox’ referred to the name of Harlowe’s backing band.  Turns out it referred to a guitarist by the same name who played on an album entitled “Ghostdance” (Root River Records catalog number 999) with James Dean Hall and Chuck Musselman.  Anyone got the story?

Red Chair Fadeway were named after a track off of the first Bee Gees lp and was Tim Vass’ first project that did not involve Gregory Webster (unlike Razorcuts, The Cinematics and The Forever People). They released two albums: Curioser and Curioser (1991) and Mesmerised (1993). Also released were three singles and a flexi. Vass also recorded with Dandelion Wine.
Apart from Vass, the band was mostly Shirley Souter who sang on some of the songs and wrote most of them. Richard Mason plays on the records as well.

Roger Rodier put out an obscure album on Columbia in 1972, Upon Velveatur, that was very much in line with the folk-rock-oriented singer/songwriter trends of the era. It was at least as much indebted to British sounds from that genre as North American ones, however, with its gentle breathy vocals, subdued melancholy, and combination of predominantly acoustic guitars with subtle strings and some female backup vocals. Prior to the LP, Rodier had issued a couple of singles on the local Montreal label Pax, the first of them sung in French. Despite getting praised in Rolling Stone by Lester Bangs for its "timeless grace," Upon Velveatur got little exposure when it was issued in autumn 1972. Although he did start work on a second album for Columbia in early 1973, it wasn't finished, and Rodier left music a few years later without having released anything else.

Although Roger Rodier is Canadian, this rare early-'70s singer/songwriter album sounds almost as if it could have been made in Britain, such is its similarity to folk-rock recordings of the time by the likes of Al Stewart. In fact Rodier faintly resembles Stewart vocally, and has an inclination toward gentle, slightly sad songs mixing acoustic guitar, orchestration, and female backup vocals (a combination used by Nick Drake on Bryter Layter). But his voice, as a singer or composer, isn't nearly as distinctive as that of, say, Stewart or Drake. Upon Velveatur is a passable effort in this tributary, Rodier's mildly lisping singing evoking both delicate sensitivity and a certain sense of detached observation. He and his songs are a little troubled, but not distraught, with the exception of "While My Castle's Burning," whose angrily strummed guitars, dramatic strings, and vitriolic vocals project muted rage, albeit of a fairly inarticulate kind. Its mixture of placidity and brooding reflection might casually recall Drake, but Rodier wasn't working on as high a level. [The 2006 CD reissue on Sunbeam adds five bonus tracks, four taken from 1969 singles, the other from the 1972 non-LP B-side "Easy Song." Generally speaking, these are less ornate than the material on Upon Velveatur, though they have a similar light folk-rock base; "Have You?" sounds a little like George Harrison's folkiest early solo material, and the two songs from the first 45, "L'Herbe"/"Tu Viendras," are sung in French.]

Rodier was a Montreal-based, Anglophone singer-songwriter whose twee yet slightly sinister style pulls the listener down into a rabbit hole of unexpected pop arrangements, into one of the most bipolar albums every made. This fragmented format is definitely not for everyone, but both styles are so well realized that it’s well worth the risk. Starting off hushed and whispery, the 1972 LP soon turns tough and anxious with the choir-backed anthem of betrayal “Am I Supposed to Let It By Again?” before slipping back into seductive intimacy in adoration of (shades of Jeff Mangum) Jesus Christ, and the heavy guitars and anguished, giddy shrieks of “While My Castle’s Burning.” Five strong bonus tracks flesh out Rodier’s versatility, which includes bubblegummy sunshine pop and sweetly spooky pop tunes in French. Nobody knew what to expect from the cover photo of Rodier, (looking a lot like Geddy Lee) staring out at us from a hazy meadow with the strange enigmatic title: Upon Velveatur. It is a dreamy French-Canadian psych-folk pop suite that varies from hushed mystical songs lushly orchestrated with strings and theremin to more rock-oriented numbers featuring stinging electric guitar. Lazy comparisons to Nick Drake are inevitable, and if we must go there, Upon Velveatur is closest to Bryter Later in terms of feel and production value. Ratchell was an American rock band formed by former Steppenwolf guitarist Larry Byrom. Also in the band were bassist Howard Messer, guitarist Pat Couchois, and drummer Chris Couchois, who had previously performed with Byrom in T.I.M.E. The band released two albums for Decca Records: Ratchell in 1971 and Ratchell II in 1972. After the band's dissolution, Messer and the Couchois brothers went on to release an album on Warner Bros. Biography:
Guitarist and songwriter Larry Byrom has performed on over a 100 albums in genres ranging from rock to country to somewhere comfortable in between. Byrom was born in 1948 in Huntsville, AL, but spent a lot of his childhood in South Bend, IN. He dropped out of high school to try out his dream of reaching rock stardom. When it didn't work out as he planned, he made a detour and found success on his own terms.
In the mid-'60s, Byrom joined a band called the Precious Few. He went right to professional status, performing on Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars. Byrom's next step was to head out to California where he joined the group Hard Times, appearing on the television show Where the Action Is. The Hard Times group called it quits before long. Byrom, undaunted, got together with Nick St. Nicholas and formed another band, T.I.M.E., which unabbreviated is Trust in Men Everywhere.
Before 1970, T.I.M.E. had transformed into a new rock band, Steppenwolf. Byrom recorded a number of hit songs with the group, including some he penned himself, like "Hey Lawdy Mama." In 1972, he left Steppenwolf to start another band, Ratchell. When it had little success, he went back home to Alabama to think about his career and where he wanted it to go. Where it went was to country music and into the studio.
By 1980, Byrom was living in Nashville, TN. He soon began working steadily as a session guitarist for superstar country artists like Barbara Mandrell, Eddie Rabbit, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and Kenny Rogers. Byrom's skills with slide, acoustic, and electric guitar, as well as his songwriting, kept him in constant demand. Over the years he added more recordings to his list of credits, working with well-known country singers such as Lorrie Morgan, Brooks & Dunn, Tanya Tucker, Randy Travis, Clint Black, and many others.

This album from 1972 by former Steampacket II member Mikael Ramel is a curiosity among curiosities. Ramel is your basic one man band on this record and while many who attempt the one man format sometimes fall short of making a cohesive album, Ramel seems to thrive in undertaking it all himself. As for the music, my best description would be folk-psych-prog-rock. The first track "Hφr du pε?" features open tuned guitars, well-recorded percussion and a lovely melody. It ends up sounding like a cross between Crosby, Stills and Nash and something Pete Townshend would write. The second track is a bit bluesy and whimsical that's almost Cream like in its execution. The record is all over the place: Pink Floyd, CSN, early Al Stewart, Pete Townshend. Moments will remind listeners of all those from time to time and probably a few others, too. Ramel uses tape recorder manipulation to produce many of the electric guitar parts. Speeding up solo's to produce some interesting sounds. Several songs feature solid flute playing somewhere between Ray Thomas and Ian Anderson. Violin is also a featured solo instrument and is put to outstanding use on several tracks.For the most part the album is rather low key and somewhat quiet in tone. " Lεngt in i naturen" uses outdoor sounds for a soundscape. A terrific organ solo keys the track and will remind one of Pink Floyd's "Several Small Species..." track from Ummagumma when the organ fades out and leaves the outdoor sounds with curious sped up vocal noises. Ramel's variety of instrumentation, strong sense of melody and his psychedelic sensibilities manage to take a record that could easily come apart at the seems and turn it into something unique.While none of the album's tracks are overly progressive, many have prog leanings such as the nearly eleven minute "Artificiell Prana". The track starts off with a brief bit of tape manipulation into an almost Doobie Bros. feel, if the Doobies had been from Sweeden. Something about the way the acoustic guitars are produced has that Doobies sound. Numerous solos abound on this tune and it probably is the highlight of the record.The bonus tracks on the CD reissue don't really do anything to surpass the original album versions, although "Jam-jam", which is not part of the original LP, does have nice Zappaesque guitar work.To sum it up, the first time I heard the album, I thought it was curious, but with further listening, I've decided it's still a curious record, but it has unique charm all its own.

First released as a private press in 1978, this is a classic slice of Swedish, keyboard driven prog with a very DIY production. Almost symphonic in its execution and performance, and with great swathes of classic synth and guitar work, the overall sound is reminiscent of bands like Camel, or Van Der Graaf Generator in their more contemplative moments. An excellent hidden slice of undiscovered prog taking the musical journey to it’s highlight in the 15 minute "E-Matt ".This is their 2nd LP.

Biography:
Psychedelic pop combo the Rainy Daze formed in Denver, CO, in 1965. Comprised of singer/guitarist Tim Gilbert, his brother Kip on drums, lead guitarist Mac Ferris, bassist Sam Fuller, and keyboardist Bob Heckendorf, the group started as little more than a covers act, nevertheless parlaying a string of frat party gigs into a local television appearance that reportedly caught the attention of famed producer Phil Spector, who extended a management contract. A massive publicity campaign was in the planning stages when the spectacular failure of his magnum opus, Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High," left Spector's career in shambles; the Rainy Daze were among the collateral damage, and only in 1967 did their debut single, "That Acapulco Gold" -- written by Tim Gilbert in collaboration with his college roommate John Carter -- appear on Denver producer Frank Slay's Chicory label. When the single caught fire locally the fledgling UNI label snapped up national distribution rights, but with "That Acapulco Gold" at number 70 on the Billboard charts, the bottom fell out. Once radio programmers finally intuited the song's pro-marijuana content, it was pulled from play lists coast to coast. The Rainy Daze quickly resurfaced with "Discount City," which went nowhere. The follow-up, "Fe Fi Fo," was quickly deleted and reissued under the new and improved title "Blood of Oblivion," even securing a U.K. release but still failing to crack pop radio. After an LP, That Acapulco Gold, and a Tim Gilbert solo single, "Early October," UNI dropped the group. However, by this time Gilbert and Carter were earning notice as a crack songwriting duo, and via Slay earned a crack at revamping a demo track cut by an unknown psych-pop outfit known as Thee Sixpence. Gilbert and Carter added lyrics and a new melody, titling the finished song "Incense and Peppermints." Thee Sixpence cut the new tune, renamed themselves the Strawberry Alarm Clock immediately thereafter, and in late 1967 topped the Billboard pop charts. No doubt the success of "Incense and Peppermints" contributed to splitting the Rainy Daze in early 1968, but Gilbert nevertheless signed to White Whale to record one final Daze single, "Make Me Laugh," backed by L.A. session players. He and Carter next masterminded Horses, a country-rock quintet whose eponymous 1969 LP was a victim of White Whale's pending bankruptcy. Gilbert soon after retired from music, but Carter forged on, later writing for Sammy Hagar and the Motels. He also produced two songs on Tina Turner's 1984 comeback smash Private Dancer before moving into artist management.

A great pop-punk-psychedelic outfit from Denver, Colorado. Only the first 45 appears on their album which is recommended. They first formed in 1965 when they specialised in playing beat and R&B and they were a regular attraction at local frat parties. Almost unbelievably they were unearthed by Phil Spector who signed them to a management contract and a giant publicity campaign was planned but never really materialised. A year or so later That Acapulco Gold appeared on the local IP label and Frank Slay, a local producer, bought the rights and released it on his Chicory label. However, it was quickly leased to UNI and became the band's best known song making the No. 70 spot. Although they never again equalled this commercial success they continued to make some excellent 45s. One of the best, a beautifully crafted piece of pop-psych was originally released as Fe Fi Fo Fum, but was almost immediately withdrawn and reissued with a different title Blood Of Oblivion, even securing a U.K. release (Polydor 56737). Tim Gilbert, the main songwriter, also released a solo 45 Early October/If We Stick Together (UNI 55045) 1967 - folkie fare which has been compared to Tim Buckley. He would go into songwriting and his compositions (with J. Carter) would appear on Hardwater (fellow Coloradans The Astronauts in disguise), Yankee Dollar, Horses and Strawberry Alarm Clock LPs. Their album includes the first 45 and Discount City, a sorta bluesy honky tonk, which was the 'A' side of their third 45. Aside from an almost four minute medley of Shake, Knock On Wood and Respect, other notable songs include a pretty good cover of Stephen Stills' For What Its Worth, a fuzzy Taxman-like song called Weatherman and an Eastern-style slice of psychedelia, Snow And Ice And Burning Sand. However, the album's finest moment was In My Mind Lives A Forest (the flip to their first 45) - an exquisite slice of pop-psychedelia. Recommended. Compilation appearances have included: Absurd Bird on Kicks & Chicks (LP); Make Me Laugh on Of Hopes And Dreams & Tombstones (LP) and Psychedelic Unknowns, Vol. 7 (LP & CD); That Acapulco Gold on Psychedelic Visions (CD); In My Mind Lives A Forest on Psychedellc Archives, Vol. 6 and Acid and Flowers (CD); and Fe Fi Fo Fum on Highs In The Mid Sixties, Vol. 18 (LP).

Of all the zillions of CSNY-inspired westcoast hippie rock LPs from the early 1970s, this is one of the very best. Another feather in the cap for the great Columbia Canada office, with an excellent production bringing out the max from these talented longhairs. Clearly out of a "Deja Vu" corner (minus the sugary Nash crap, naturally), the songwriting here is very good, grabbing your attention without being overly commercial, while the band lays down a groove that is both relaxed and tight. You can hear early AOR moves creeping into the hippie stylings, and much like on Homer this is not a disadvantage but helps broaden the album's impact. Female vocalist Franki Hart of Freedom North handles a few tracks, but is given solid competition by the male vocalists who sing just as well. Soaring, lyrical guitar leads recur throughout the LP, and there are some vague prog moves with flute on one track. Clocking in at 42 minutes, this could have omitted 1-2 tracks, and it's a testament to Riverson's strength that the playtime seems warranted. Recommended to anyone with an ear for top-level, upscale 70s westcoast sounds.

I was introduced to this record after getting into one of Phil Pearlman's other bands, Beat of the Earth, and the great record label, Radioactive Records. Absolutely brilliant west coast rock, with a slick mid 70's Neil Young like production. This should be a great album for everyone to dig this summer. Love!
First ever reissue. Former "Beat Of The Earth" leader Phil Pearlman assembled Relatively Clean Rivers in the early '70s and eventually recorded this excellent rural rock album in 1975. Although it should be easy to pigeonhole the sound of Relatively Clean Rivers, it is actually anything but. At times sounding like The Grateful Dead in all their American Beauty pomp, or CSNY circa Deja Vu, this tight, richly talented ensemble produces an album of almost majestic quality. The sound is superb, and clearly no time or expense were spared to produce an album which is probably the most flawless snapshot of Californian '70s under ground music that you will ever here. Originally there were 2 pressings of this unique album, each of only 500 copies each, and this is the first time that this, or any of Pearlman's other recordings has been reissued. An album highly recommended to anyone even remotely interested in '70s West Coast music or simply top-notch music in general.

A tremendous mid-1970's rural psych album that sounds like it was recorded in late 1968, Relatively Clean Rivers has that hippie commune Springfield/Manson Family/Dead vibe down pat. Although most often compared to The Dead, only the record's first cut, "Easy Ride" really sounds much like them, with it's acoustic/electric guitar mix and American Beauty era vocal styles. It's a great song, but the rest of the album is much different and a little bit better, spewing out wasted Topanga Canyon folkpsych with wacked out commune lyrics. Production is great and the musicianship is stellar, so we don't really get much of that 'real people' vibe prevalent in many other records with that 'rural' feel, but this still more than holds up. There really is nothing else quite like this, and the smashed lysergic hippie trip present here is anything but a novelty. You can totally feel the Canyon here, and these folks never did wind up leaving. The original vinyl is long gone, with only two pressings of 500 each supposedly, but my Radioactive Label CD reissue is nice, with a clear reproduction of the lyrics and liner notes and a nice, warm pseudo-analog sound. Great stuff......

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez was born in 1942 to Mexican immigrant parents in Detroit, Michigan. He was discovered by Dennis Coffey and his production partner Mike Theodore while singing in a Detroit club facing the wall. Impressed by his sound, they took Sixto to Sussex boss Clarance Avant, who signed him immediately. He released two albums on Sussex: His debut, Cold Fact, is a hidden gem, containing psychedelic protest song, not unlike Dylan’s, but edgier and funkier. The famous Sugarman can be found on this album. The second Sussex releases is called Coming from Reality, recorded in London and not as captivating as Cold Fact.
Although his first album did't sell very well, a second Sussex album, Coming from Reality, was released in the fall of 1971. This time recorded in London with British producers Steve Rowland and Chris Spedding replacing the Sussex crew. Which resulted in an album way more folkier, more poppy and unfortunately less funky due to the abscence of the Coffey-Theodore duo and the Funk Brothers rhythm section. Including Halfway Up The Stairs, the first song Rodriguez ever wrote. The album will be reissued in may 2009 by Light in the Attic, and also includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded in Detroit in 1972 with Theodore & Coffey, representing the last thing the trio ever did together.

Co-produced by Mike Lewis (who wrote most of the material) and Stuart Wiener, 1969's "Corners of Your Mind" found the quartet shifting to a distinctive hard rock and psych sound. On the surface that type of calculated move would seem to have spelled artistic disaster, but somehow that wasn't the case this time around. Whereas the self titled debut album sounded calculated, Dinunzio and company seemed much more inspired and engaged on their sophomore set. Perhaps the biggest surprise was simply the fact Dinunzio's blue-eyed soul voice proved well suited for tougher material like the opening rocker 'Ain't Nobody Gonna Love You', 'Sweet Little Smoke' (so much for lyrical subtlety), and the amphetamine powered 'Suburban Life'. Sure, this was just as calculated as the rest of their catalog, but you had to smile hearing Dinunzio singing about 'marshmallow sea' and 'forbidden fruits'. With the exception of the needless 'Get Out My Life Woman' reprise (mis-credited to 'Alan' Toussaint and Dinunzio sounding like a heavily dosed Bugs Bunny), the entire album demonstrated an attractive blend of commerciality and lysergic influences. Other highlights included the unexpected cover of Hendrix's 'Little Wing' (probably the standout track) and the the trippy LP closer 'The Minstrel'. Elsewhere Jubilee tapped 'Suburban Life' b/w 'The Loser' as a single (Jubilee catalog number 45-5638).
Frustrated by their inability to break through the band subsequently called it quits with Denuzzio going on to record a single billed as 'Sebastian' and an LP under his own name. Sadly he was killed in an October 1978 car crash.

The album itself is a pretty good offering of leftist political folk/rock with a hint of psychedelia here and there. He comes across as bit of a Latino Bob Dylan.
The songs are well written and performed but for me the best thing about this this album is that I can slip it on the turntable and be 19 again.
A secret diamond for me. rodriguez, a single phaenomenon, a master of melodies, which hit into the open minded heart. very easy, very true.

Biography:
Sixto Diaz Rodriguez (also known as Rodriguez or as Jesus Rodriguez) is a US folk musician, born in Detroit, Michigan on the 10th of July 1942. He was named 'Sixto' because he was the sixth child in his family. Rodriguez's parents were middle-class immigrants from Mexico, who left in the 1920s. In most of his songs he takes a political stance on the cruelties facing the inner-city poor.
It was after the move to Sussex he changed his professional name to just Rodriguez. Rodriguez recorded two albums with Sussex - "Cold Fact", in 1970, and "Coming to Reality" in 1971. But after mixed reviews and low album sales he was later dropped from the label, which would later fold in 1975.
As his music career became a memory, Rodriguez's legend was growing - on the other side of the world. In South Africa and, to a lesser extent, Rhodesia, Australia and New Zealand, Cold Fact had become a major word of mouth success, particularly among young people in the South African armed forces, who identified with its counter-cultural bent. But Rodriguez was an enigma - not even the label knew where to find him - and his demise became the subject of debate and conjecture. Some rumours said he'd died of a heroin overdose or burned to death on stage. Others said he was in a mental institution, or in prison for murdering his girlfriend. Barring a couple of small-scale Australian tours in 1979 and 1981, nothing had been heard of him for almost 30 years. But the tide began to turn in 1996, when journalist Craig Bartholemew set out to get to the bottom of the mystery. After many dead ends, he found Rodriguez alive, well, free and perfectly sane in Detroit, ending years of speculation. Rodriguez himself had no idea about his fame in South Africa (the album had gone multi-platinum, Rodriguez has received not so much as a Rand in royalties), and embarked on a triumphant South African tour followed, filling 5,000 capacity venues across the country.
A documentary named Dead Men Don't Tour: Rodriguez in South Africa 1998 was screened on national TV. Rodriguez was still largely unknown in the northern hemisphere until 2002, when Sugar Man, the album's extra-terrestrially wonderful lead track, was picked up by David Holmes.The DJ discovered the album in a New York record store, and included it on his Come Get It, I Got It compilation, re-recording the song with Rodriguez for his Free Association project a year later.

Here are many odd things about the sole release from Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers. First of all, the album was recorded in one weekend. The band drove up to New York from their hometown of Pittsburgh, recorded the album, and went home. Secondly, the album's label, Musicor Records, was primarily a country label. The only other hippie band on the label was the equally obscure Tingling Mothers Circus. Third, the bluegrass sounding band name; while hippies often DO have farms (especially indoor ones), the band name is hardly an indicator of the freakiness present on the album. And that's just the beginning: there are two Ilenes in the band (although one is really Lauren Wood), no one is actually named Rebecca, there is a violin player, and the band is nearly eclectic to a fault. And yet, the album holds together under the weight of all this strangeness, managing to deliver a solid set of songs that are enthsuiastically and imaginatively played
Side One is especially strong. "Two Blind Sisters" is a beautiful, baroque tearjerker, "Endless Trip" is a nice slice of West Coast pop, and "David and Sally" fairly represents the band's kooky, old-world side. Side two veers away from pop, with only slightly less success. "Better Dead than Red" starts off innocuously enough in a reflective, soft-psych mode, only to explode into a barrage of gunfire sound effects, whistles, and cacophonous drumming.
If you can track down a copy, I highly recommended this album, especially the songs composed and sung by Lauren Wood, a gifted songwriter who still plays to this day.

For all you crazy collectors out there: There exists two versions of this fine Danish psych/progressive classic: One (the one many connisseurs considers the best) recorded with singer Lars Bisgaard and released late 1970. When Allan Mortensen replaced Bisgaard in December 1970 four new tracks were laid down, while Mortensen recorded new vocals for the remaining three tracks. This version was released in February 1971. So in essence we're talking two different albums, though of course there are plenty of similarities. To confuse matters further the albums were released with identical sleeves and on the same label with the same number: Sonet 1523. So you have to open the gatefold to find out which version you've got. Just to set the record straight: My copy is version 2 with Mortensen singing; as he possesses a fine gospel-tinged voice I find it quite good though I definitely would like to hear the other version someday just to compare. If you can get a hold of the fine twofer Rainbow Band / Midnight Sun (from 1979) you get both the albums in one go! Later in 1971 the group changed its name to Midnight Sun as they got into trouble with a Canadian band also calling themselves Rainbow Band - alas, the latter had copyrighted the name! As such they recorded two fine albums bordering on jazz-fusion with yet another singer by the name of Frank Lauridsen. This band I saw several times as the group's very accomplished guitar-player Peer Frost was quite a hero on the early 70's Danish music-scene.
