Biography:
Folk-rock outfit the Hobbits was the studio project of Queens, New York-born singer/songwriter Jimmy Curtiss, who ranks as one of the more interesting footnotes in the history of rock & roll — the rare would-be teen idol who actually wrote his own material (and did so admirably), he later expanded his reach into psychedelia and harmony-laden folk-rock, but while the subject of a small cult following, none of his records ever made a commercial dent. Curtiss first surfaced in 1959 as a member of the doo wop combo the Enjays and issued his solo debut, "Without You," on United Artists in 1961 — the label attempted to position him as a teen crooner in the mold of Bobby Vee or Paul Anka, but he failed to make a commercial impact. After a period working as a songwriter he dropped out of music to pursue a career in advertising before resurfacing in 1967 with the bubblegum cult classic "Psychedelic Situation," a major hit in Germany that attracted little attention at home.
Curtiss then signed to Decca, collaborating with producers Jerry Vance and Terry Phillips and songwriter Marcia Hillman on the Hobbits — despite borrowing their name from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings novels and titling their 1967 debut Down to Middle Earth, the Hobbits turned out relatively straightforward sunshine pop, and the album is much sought-after by soft-psych aficionados. The follow-up, Men and Doors: The Hobbits Communicate, appeared in 1968 — like its predecessor, the record didn't sell, and Decca terminated the contract. Curtiss then formed his own label and production company, both dubbed Perception, and helmed an LP and three singles by the psychedelic soul act the Bag, members of which reportedly worked on the Hobbits project as well. Speaking of which, after rechristening the group the New Hobbits, Curtiss released 1969's Back From Middle Earth, essentially a solo effort. According to the liner notes in the second volume of the Soft Sounds for Gentle People series, he eventually ended up in San Francisco, going solely by the initials J.C. — his current activities and whereabouts are unknown.

A somewhat mysterious but eminently worthwhile quartet from Indianapolis, IN, Anonymous was active in the mid- to late '70s but sounded like they came from a decade earlier. The group's acknowledged antecedents were the Beatles and the Byrds, but from such familiar trappings, Anonymous created a richly textured version of classic psychedelia that both adheres to and ignores the common precepts of the genre. The mellow, wide-ranging but never aimless results sound like a cross between a far more structured version of Quicksilver Messenger Service and an American equivalent of the fluid, jazz-tinged progressive rock of Curved Air.
This is a superb album of melodic guitar driven rock which blends exquisitely with Marsha's vocals on tracks like J Rider, Up To You, Pick Up And Run and Baby Come Risin', which is probably the album's finest moment. If you like ringing guitar work and harmonic vocals, this album is for you...

Velvett Fogg was formed in 1968 out of a respectable Brum band called Gravy Train.
The initial line-up of Velvett Fogg featured guitarist Tony Iommi (later to make the big time with Black Sabbath). Tony stayed in the line-up for only one gig before leaving to be replaced temporarily by Ian Leighton. It was during this time that Pye Records arranged a photo-shoot of the band for the cover of their proposed first album . This is the pre-Paul Eastment line-up of the band wearing garish make-up/body-paint, and also included two well-endowed young women wearing nothing but strategically applied body paint! U.K. disc jockey John Peel commented in the sleeve notes that "There is a lot of good music on this record. Remember Velvett Fogg - you will hear the name again."
Velvett Fogg recorded the tracks for their debut album under direction of Pye producer Jack Dorsey, who aimed to get the band onto the then-popular "progressive" band wagon. The band also recorded covers of a few songs they liked and these included psychedelic-sounding versions of "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by The Bee Gees, and Tim Rose's "Come Away Melinda". The self-titled album was released on the Pye label in January of 1969, who also released a single: a cover of The Tornado's classic instrumental "Telstar" hoping to cash in on the publicity surrounding the American moon landings taking place at that time. While receiving some radio play, the record did not sell enough copies to chart and a big advertising campaign planned by the record company to promote the album never materialised. Though the band did a bit of touring after the single came out, poor sales made Pye lose interest in the band, and they withdrew their backing. In the autumn of 1969 the group disbanded with the members going their separate ways.

Listening to the album’s opening track “Misfit” is truly an indescribable feeling. It is pure 60s garage rock at its finest, with pounding guitar down strums, roaring bass fills, and wonderfully angst filled lyrics. Just as the listener is adjusting to the hard- hitting nature of the song he/she is hit even harder by a screaming guitar solo that is sure to send chills down the spine of anyone who is listening carefully. Wonderful as it is, this intense garage rock sound does not dominate the entire album. As a matter of a fact, the musical style of CQ is absolutely unpredictable, and cannot be pinned down. Songs like “You’re everything on Earth” are sweet and simple, featuring mainly a pretty guitar riff, and warm melody. Whereas songs like “Wish you were here with me today” are composed of driving bass-lines and reverb-filled guitar that sounds very reminiscent of early 60s surf rock. The album concludes with “Prison Song” a tune that begins with an inviting guitar and pretty lyrics like “Today the sun will shine for me again”. However, as the song continues the lyrics become more and more bizarre, and the musical tension starts build. Suddenly, singer Wally Tax softly speaks the words “While we walk the feeling in my stomach climbs up into my chest/ and I don’t know what it is, but it sure feels strange” and the listener is tossed into a great sea of musical madness. Great noise and chaos builds as Tax calmly speaks disturbing lyrics sure to make any listener squirm. The song climaxes in a flurry of noise, when suddenly the madness ends, and prettiness prevails. This 5 minute 38 second piece embodies all that is the genius of The Outsiders, and it is not short of brilliant.

Here’s another Mainstream label gem, and possibly one of my favorite albums I’ve heard on the label. These Montreal based musicians (save one), decided to journey south of the border to New York to find their scene. Known as The Funky Farm, Mainstream decided to change their name for the release of the album. In typical record business style, Mainstream didn’t even inform the band of the name change! Featuring an outrageous psychedelic cover of a very colorful and oversized clown engulfed in an earthquake with flames, it certainly would catch ones attention even for 1969, when such a sight was more common. Stone Circus possess the same songwriting qualities as Strawberry Alarm Clock, and period instrumentation (fuzz guitar, old organs). It does miss that magic ingredient of naivete, that Strawberry Alarm Clock was able to tap into so perfectly. Whether it’s the California sunshine that’s missing, or the late date of 1969, it’s clear there’s a little somethin’ missing. Still, Stone Circus’ one album is one of the better representatives of the era.
Enjoyable from start to finish, it's a treat for all fans of melodic psychedelia!

This is one excellent obscure acid psychedelic record. This is a story of a man trying to overcome his drug addiction through faith. It is a lonely, moody record. I have no idea why this isn't a widely known record. The emotion on this acid folky record is huge, not to mention the simple pureness of the songs. Do yourself a favor and listen to this, you're missing out if you don't.

Strange enchanting dreamy acoustic custom of slow melodic tunes sleepily adrift in a hazy stereo-echoed blur of ethereal guitar work and sedated vocals, heavy on the lost loner “real people” vibes. Bixby’s story is detailed on the back cover – how he destroyed his life with substance abuse (recounted in ‘Drug Song’), cried out to God for his sanity, and eventually received a testimony of Jesus Christ. Ode To Quetzalcoatl contains twelve of his post-conversion songs, featuring titles like ‘Free Indeed’, ‘I Have Seen Him’, ‘Morning Sun’, ‘Open Doors’, ‘666’ and ‘Waiting For The Rains’. Occasional cosmic weirdity in the lyrics, as on ‘Prayer’ (“pick out a cloud, and speak very loud, and that cloud will be yours forever”). Sometimes joined by a second guitar, plus onetime appearances of harmonica (‘Secret Forest’) and spacey flute (‘Peace’). The mysterious album title reference to the ancient Mexican serpent god isn’t explained anywhere, nor is it mentioned in any of the songs. Some highly unusual yet very captivating stuff here, guaranteed to make yourself ask “where is this guy coming from?”.

"Highly rated by the few who have heard it, this tormented religious loner/downer folk LP has to rank as one of the ultimate incarnations of the genre. The opening "Drug Song" sets the tone perfectly as a supremely world-weary, echo-laden guy laments on how he screwed himself up with dope; "I'm no longer a person, I can't even feel". The resolution is (of course) Christ, who is serenaded in the following tracks, although the despairing, suicidal mood is strangely unchanged. Salvation or none, it seems most things are still a mess for Bixby. Numbers such as "Mother" and the Grudzien-level "666" confirm such suspicions. Musically it's a wellwritten lo-fi recording of steelstringed acoustic and a single voice, much like Christopher Montgomery, but undoubtedly more tortured and intense. Frantic guitar strumming is used to tighten up the tension in an effective way a la Perry Leopold, while more lyrical moods are supported by swift fingerpicking. The vocals are amateurish and somewhat uneven, and in fact work best when most charged with emotion. The organic correspondence between lyrics, playing and arrangements is impressive and makes the LP seem more alive and artistically aware than most in this often disappointing genre. Must be heard by any fringe fan. [PL]"

From Boston and rated highly by some, this album includes some fine guitar and organ work on cuts like Baby: Where Are You?. Still an undiscovered gem this is worth searching out. Most of the vocals were performed by drummer Ernie Kamanis, and Peter Malick who was 16 at the time the album was recorded. Walter Powers had previously been in the famed punk band The Lost. A reworked version of the album's opener, Michael Tschudin's You're Not There, appears on the highly-touted album ...Setting Forth... Improvising Against The Future by Odyssey. Michael Tschudin later played with Cynara and produced the Fort Mudge Memorial Dump album. He became a session man and producer during the seventies, notably working with Tim Curry. Peter Malick played with the James Montgomery Band and is is still active, fronting his own Peter Malick Band playing blues / R&B influenced music in/around Boston. Walter Powers teamed up with his old Lost companion Willie "Loco" Alexander in the final incarnation of The Velvet Underground. The uplifting baroque-pop of Hello You can be found on Bring Flowers To U.S. (LP), whilst one track from the album, Stoned Is has also resurfaced on Marijuana Unknowns (LP & CD).

Warm Dust was one of those obscure progressive rock bands that slipped through the cracks, but released three albums. This was an early band featuring Paul Carrack before he earned his fame with Ace ("How Long"), Sqeeze ("Tempted"), and of course Mike & the Mechanics, not to mention the solo albums he did in the '80s. Now I understand the name Paul Carrack might make many of you run like hell, but what he's done in Warm Dust is nothing like those groups I mentioned.In 1970, they released their debut album And It Came to Pass, and like Chicago when they were still Chicago Transit Authority or the Mothers of Invention's Freak Out, is one of the rare examples of a double album debut. Aside from Paul Carrack, the group also featured vocalist/guitarist Dransfield "Les" Walker, John Surgey on wind instruments (flute, sax, oboe, clarinet), Alan Salomen on additional wind instruments, Terry "Tex" Comer on bass and guitars, and Dave Pepper on drums and percussion. Frequently this band was described as Chicago meets Caravan, but they really weren't a brass rock band like Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and such British counterparts as The Greatest Show on Earth or IF, but musically they could also bring to mind such groups. For one thing, Warm Dust wasn't really a horn rock band, but sax and flute, on top of Paul Carrack's Hammond organ was what made up this band's sound. If anything, they remind me a bit of Web/Samurai (Dave Lawson's bands prior to Greenslade that had a sound dominated by wind instruments)...

‘Ultimate Spinach’ was founded in 1967 under the name of 'Underground Cinema' as the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ian Bruce-Douglas. The same year the band changed their name to 'Ultimate Spinach' and recorded their first record for MGM, produced by the ambitious Alan Lorber. Lorber created together with MGM the marketing concept of the 'Boston Sound' (later 'Bosstown' sound) to propose (and sell) an alternative to the West-coast bands. The three Boston bands starting that "movement” were ‘Ultimate Spinach’, ‘Orpheus’ and ‘The Beacon Street Union’. These bands, all produced by Alan Lorber, had musically not much in common and ‘Ultimate Spinach’ was the most interesting band to come out of this hype. Their first self-titled record, inspired by West-coast bands like ‘The Doors’ and ‘Jefferson Airplane’, presented an original mixture of psychedelic rock, folk and classical music. All lyrics and music were written by leader Ian Bruce-Douglas. ‘Ultimate Spinach’ privileged long elaborated suites, alternating instrumental passages, poetry and multipart vocals (the voice of Barbara Hudson reminding Grace Slick and Sonja Kristina) with original arrangements, including flutes, sitar, harpsichord and the electronic Theremin instrument. The record sold well, but the band was a victim of the hype and got negative critics by the press. The second record “Behold and See” was released in 1968 and followed the direction of the first with tighter tracks and the same overall quality. At the end of 1968 the band was reformed with Bruce-Douglas keeping only singer Barbara Hudson, but finally he left the band prior to the recording of the third self-titled ‘Ultimate Spinach’ record, leaving Barbara Hudson as the only original member. The record moved away from the psychedelic sound of the first two records and consisted of mainstream rock songs. ‘Ultimate Spinach’ recorded some of the most original psychedelic rock records.
