Reviews:
A self contained group [4 guys and 1 girl] common to this period. Though at times very loud and vocally histrionic the album flows as an uninterrupted suite. Everyone contributes, and as these things go Floating Opera isn't a bad record. They do a nice job with the ballads, and the album is cleanly produced. Fans of this style group/music will almost certainly like Floating Opera. The album is packaged in a nice looking gatefold cover with the lyrics inside, and the group's picture on the front.

The first two songs here are absolutely killer, making the rest of the album pretty disappointing by comparison. “Song of The Suicides” is a pained masterpiece with a stunning guitar solo and a melodic sound that feels like Zerfas. “The Vision” is a hot powerful rocker with some relentless organ playing by Carol Lees (many reviews of this album mistakenly claim that she’s a singer. Apparently some people review the album by just looking at the cover and not by listening to it, as all of the album’s vocalists are male.) The other songs are lesser variations on these two styles, without all that much inspiration, though the playing is strong throughout. Contains a song called “Age of Onan,” for those of you who collect odes to masturbation. [AM]

Who gave acid to these kids? Chemically induced or not, they committed a psychedelic gem of “Present Tense” (1968, by Sagittarius) and “Begin” (1968, by Millennium) proportions, lyrically and musically. The uniqueness and charm of the release is increased by the stripped down treatment of the vocals, which sound like voices of the best girls at their respective primary school – drowsing choir – and given a record deal, and it worked handsomely. If we compare with the superbly carried out the studio piloting backing up The Millennium, we will easily see that Curt Boettcher – the spiritual father of XTC’s Andy Partridge – was confirming his innovative ways of commanding recording knobs, facing this task as substantial part of the artistic direction, which became a kind of common sense in current rock-pop productions. With Wendy & Bonnie we have to take another vintage point. The release is the epitome of studio simplicity and technical straightforwardness, which more than often leads to utter crap, but not in “Genesis”. Wendy & Bonnie Flower knitted a masterpiece, and in the Palaeolithic way. In an era of hardcore industrial reproduction of works of art to which music is no exception, the album at stake sounds hand-made. A superior hymn to obsolescence, the way masterpieces mechanically produced should sound.

This is a very cool album. While it is definitely a late-'60s period piece, it's appeal is timeless.
The Flower sisters had a dark-angel harmony. Their moody take on the world is both innocently wide-eyed, yet wise beyond their tender years (17 and 13). The musicianship, by a soft-psychedelic stable of first-rate session players (guitarist Larry Carlton, drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist Mike Melvoin, etc.) under the guidance of lounge-jazz wizard Gary McFarland (Producer), is superb, adding colorful atmospherics and breezy Brazilian washes. This album was obscure -- the original record label went out of business shortly after the album came out in 1969 -- but it has had a deserved cult following for decades. Tim and Laetitia of Stereolab are known to be big fans (Tim called it "undeniably a great LP"), and it's obvious why -- Wendy and Bonnie had trail-blazed a similar musical path 25 years before. The voices are gentle, but never vapid. The arrangements are sophisticated, and the songcraft is solid. Genesis manages to avoid many of the cliches of late '60s SF psychedelia.

Biography:
The only pure hippie group to come from Copenhagen during the late sixties was Young Flowers. The aspiring guitar player Peer Frost had previously been in Peter Belli & Les Rivals. Blomsterpistolen (1968 - the title means "the flower pistol") was a milestone in Danish rock. The music was made for their own surrealistic TV movie of the same name (which also featured their "rivals" The Beefeaters). Young Flowers were strongly influenced by Cream, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles (typified by their classics "Strange Brew", "Axis: Bold As Love" and "Taxman", respectively). A couple of the tracks had Danish lyrics, including "25 Ore" (7:53), a never ending boogie blues derived from Canned Heat's "On The Road Again". More effective was the psychedelic jam "April '68" (8:56) and the shorter songs with strong lead guitars, studio effects (lots of flanging) and a really strong rhythm section. The group lacked a really capable vocalist, though.
The second album contained more of the same, ranging from the exceedingly flanged "And Who But I Should Be" to the "Calypso" in "Obladi-Oblada" style. The trio are joined by Niels Skousen on many tracks and by The Maxwells on the freakout track "Kragerne Vender" (10:31). In. my view, this album was their most powerful and best effort. Young Flowers undoubtedly inspired a flood of young aspiring power trios, including Blues Addicts, Terje, Jesper & Joachim and Moses (although these had a rawer garage sound). The three young flowers themselves would later resurface in several important groups: Peer Frost in Midnight Sun, Rainbow Band and Savage Rose, Peter Ingemann in No Name and as a session musician for hippie folk-rocker Sebastian, and Ken Goodman in Culpeper's Orchard.

ROGUE BOY INTO JAIL
"Red Hash", Gary Higgins' melancholy masterpiece, is often cited in the same breath as such admired hippy-folk obscurities as Skip Spence's "oar", Linda Perhacs "Parallelograms" and Vashti Bunyan's "Just another Diamond Day". Unlike those artists, however, Higgins' story has a novel twist: by the time the album was relased in March 1973, he was doing time in a maximum security Jail!
Higgins and his chums were self-described "hippies living in the country", the extent of their crimes limited to smoking marijuana ("I even inhaled," Higgins reveals). The situation turned serious, however, when Higgins and manager Gary 'Chico' Cardillo were caught up in President Nixon's newly declared War On Drugs. As a result of their involvement in an October 1972 pot bust - they'd become unwitting pawns in a large undercover police operation - they found themself facing long, hard prison sentences.
"It certainly shocked us." says Higgins. "But it brought forth an urgency in getting some songs down on tape because I didn't know if I'd ever get another chance." ...

Biography:
Born in Sharon, Connecticut, Higgins cut his musical teeth in 1960s New York, first in the psychedelic group Random Concept and later with avant-folkies Wooden Wheel. In 1972, Higgins was caught up in a drug sting; but shortly before entering a maximum-security facility, he cut a record featuring members of his two prior groups: Jake Bell (guitar, vocals), Maureen Wells (cello, vocal), Jerry Fenton (piano, organ), Dave Beaujon (bass), and Paul Jerney (mandolin, flute, vocals). Besides singing and playing guitar, Higgins recorded drums for a few cuts.
The record was titled (not by Higgins) Red Hash, and it failed to sell out its modest printing of a few thousand copies. After his release, Higgins held down a series of jobs in the Connecticut/New York area, eventually marrying and raising a son. While he play in a bar bands, he didn't pursue further recording, and his record became a foggy memory.
In the 1990s, a small cult of devotion bloomed around the record, a cult that included David Tibet of Current 93 and Six Organs of Admittance's Ben Chasny, who covered "Thicker Than a Smokey" for his album School of the Flower in hopes of getting Higgins' attention. Eventually, Sub Pop/Drag City staffer Zach Cowie located Higgins, signed him to Drag City, and oversaw the re-release of Red Hash in the summer of 2005. In July of that year, Higgins played his first solo show, supported by members of Random Concept, as well as his guitarist son, Graham.

For decades, J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy had been well loved by book readers everywhere. Now, New Zealand-born director Peter Jackson is transforming the epic on to the big screen, the first installment, The Fellowship of the Ring had already hit the theaters at the end of 2001. In 1978, there was a rather forgettable animated version of Lord of the Rings. But before Lord of the Rings ever appeared on any type of screen, musicians were recording music inspired by Lord of the Rings, and Bo Hansson from Sweden recorded such an album in 1970.
The album was originally released in Sweden on the Silence label as Sagan Om Ringen, and all the songs bore Swedish titles. Eventually in 1972, Charisma Records, the British label that gave us Genesis, Rare Bird, Van der Graaf Generator/Peter Hammill, Lindisfarne, and even Monty Python, had released the Bo Hansson album for international distribution, this time with totally different cover artwork, the better known English title, which was Lord of the Rings, and the fact the songs now all bore English titles. Don't worry, nothing was changed musically, as this is all instrumental music. Basically the music is very mystical sounding prog rock dominated by Hammond organ and Moog synthesizer.
He got some help with the likes of Gunnar Bergsten on sax, Sten Bergman on flute, and Rune Carlsson on drums. Hansson did all the keyboard work, as well as guitar and bass. Songs, as you may guess, bear titles like "Leaving Shire", "The Old Forest/Tom Bombadil", "Lothlorien", "The Ring Goes South", "Shadowfax", and many more. None of the songs are over 4 minutes long. The music is totally different from the more typical Hollywood type orchestral fare that is found on the Peter Jackson movie.
Bo Hansson's Lord of the Rings had been frequently criticized as being "cheesy organ and synthesizer music" (which I don't think so), and not fitting in with the trilogy. Usually these come from people who like to collect Lord of the Rings-related material, but don't listen to prog rock. To me, this music fits perfect to Tolkien's trilogy. You simply have to like prog rock, or understand what music was like in the early 1970s to appreciate it.
The album has a home made production. Most of this album was recorded at Bo Hansson's home on an island outside of Stockholm. Yeah, the music does get a little repetitious, but the truly mystical atmosphere makes up for the album's shortcoming. So if you're a Tolkien fan and a prog rock fan, be sure to add this album to your collection.

Virus were a psychedelic band originating from Bielefeld in Northern Germany. Their music incorporates Pink Floyd's space rock, heavy keyboards somewhat reminiscent of Deep Purple all put together into long songs filled with jams. They released only two albums -- "Revelation" (1970) and "Thoughts" (1971). The album was recorded in Star Studios, Hamburg and produced by Konrad Plank. The Virus lineup for the first album is: Werner Monka (guitar), Jorg-Dieter Krahe (organ), Bernd "Molle" Hohmann (vocals, flute), Reinhold Spiegelfeld (bass) and Wolfgang Rieke (drums).
"Revelation" starts as a straight forward psychedelic track and develops as the song conines forward. Towards the middle of the song comes in a cover of the Rolling Stones song -- Paint It Black. Another homage is found in the second song where at the end you can hear a Saucerful Of Secrets choir bit. This album is very inventive and contains surprises along the different tracks. These songs have long guitar playing parts and exciting organ playing, both demonstrating very good musicianship.
The second album "Thoughts" is a big change from their first one. The lineup change considerably as well, leaving only Krahe and Rieke from the original group. The new members were: Axel Nieling (drums), Jürgen Schäfer (bass, vocals), Bernd Rosner (guitar) and Werner Vogt (bass, guitar, vocals). In this album they abandoned their long tracks and space rock and psychedelic nature. This album presents a more mainstream approach with blues rock songs. Therefore this would not be of interest for those looking them for their psychedelic and progressive sound.
In 2004 a 1973 live show was released under the name Remember.

It wasn't long after arriving in the U.K. that South African student Denny Gerrard began making his mark on the music scene. In 1965, Jimmy Page picked him to become one half of the duo the Fifth Avenue, while Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham brought him in as arranger for his project the Variations. Gerrard then linked up with Barry Younghusband, and as Warm Sounds they promptly unleashed the Top 30 hit "Birds and Bees." Swiftly bored with pop the duo soon split, and Gerrard moved into production, overseeing High Tide's critically acclaimed 1969 debut album, Sea Shanties. No surprise then, that when the South African began work on his own debut, self-produced, full-length, High Tide were by his side. However, the resulting album, Sinister Morning, was far more a reflection of Gerrard's vision than Tide's sound. Much of the set has a folkie feel, accentuated by the prolific use of Gerrard's acoustic guitar and harmonica.

The production gives the entire album a warm sound, although on CD it comes across as a tad too pristine. The only flaw within is Gerrard's decision to overutilize layered vocals instead of true harmonies, and paying far less attention to his vocals than he did to the rest of the album's sound. Released on Decca's mid-price imprint Nova, the album surprisingly sank without a track, but swiftly became a much sought-after collector's item. Finally after all these years, Esoteric has now lovingly remastered and reissued this splendid album on CD.

Colour Green, the one and only release from German underground folk denizen Sibylle Baier, has been around since the early '70s, albeit in her closet. Recorded on reel-to-reel in her home between 1970-1973, the budding actress, seamstress, writer, mother, and singer/songwriter chose family over fame, and it wasn't until the tapes landed in the hands of Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis that they began their ascent into the world that they so eloquently describe. A wistful rendering of Vashti Bunyan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell, Baier's conversational voice can be both tragic and comforting, turning the simplest task ("Driving") into a sepia-toned snapshot of longing. Each track is like a field recording of the highest quality, with every whisper of the locale present, yet unintelligible. Like Anne Briggs with a guitar or Nico without all of the junkie baggage, Baier, who would silently haul out the tape machine and press record late at night when her family was asleep, conveys the purest of intimacies with the kind of confidence only secrecy can afford. From the opening cut, when she sings "tonight when I came home from work/there he, unforeseen sat in my kitchen," the listener can't help but be transported behind the soft closed eyes that grace Colour Green's basement-scavenged, yellowing cover.

Credited to the "New Hobbits", this is basically a re-vamped version of the original Hobbits including members of the Bag, another group Jimmy Curtiss was involved with around the same time recording Velvet Night.This record also launched Jimmy Curtiss' Perception Records, which up to this time was the name of his production company. First time issue of unreleased third album by USA 60's band The Hobbits. Originally this album was to be released by Perception Records in 1969 but was shelved. It's a delightful example of orchestrated US 60's pop with a psychedelic edge very much in the mould of the other two Hobbits albums.
Back From Middle Earth, The Hobbit’s third and rarest psychedelic recording, appeared in 1969 on Hobbit-supremo Jimmy Curtiss’ Perception label, an imprint that bizarrely was to include Dizzy Gillespie, Shirley Horn, Tyrone Washington, Johnny Hartman, Astrud Gilberto and even Jimmy Lunceford amongst its alumnists. Although The Hobbits owed their name to the writings of Tolkien, there was little of The Shire about their music, which Curtiss described as “vocals with instrumental accompaniment”, with the emphasis very much on sophisticated harmonies reminiscent of contemporaries such as The Cowsills and Jay And The Americans. Curtiss made his recording debut as Jimmy Curtiss & The Regents in the late ‘50s, but surprisingly Return To Middle Earth is a solid ‘60s pop album which highlights the vocal talents of Curtiss and session-singer Gini Eastwood and is completely free of any references to Curtiss’ doowop past, as indeed are the three heavily psych-influenced 45s Curtiss produced (he also co-wrote two of the tracks) for Decca stable-mates The Bag in 1968. Exactly why The Hobbits changed their name to The New Hobbits is unclear, but this may, along with the album’s release on Perception (the band’s two previous efforts had both appeared on Decca) go some way to explaining why the album remained largely unknown (many Psych collectors have never seen a copy of the album), and consequently is so highly sought after today.

This is the second album from the Hobbits and is actually titled "Men And Doors: The Hobbits Communicate" By the time this was released, Jimmy Curtis was the only remaining member from their first lp, the new line-up included two female singers, Gini Eastwood and Heather Hewitt plus flamenco guitarist Marius that gave some of the cuts a Spanish feel.
Of their three albums, this one is the best production wise, and the songwriting is more stronger than the first. Curtis was involved with another project around this time with a group called Bag which released an album entitled "Real" for Decca and was described as "Psychedelic Soul". The musicians from Bag also played on the final Hobbits lp "Back From Middle Earth" which is credited to the "New Hobbits", and launched Curtis' new label Perception, the album revived the theme of the first lp.
