Named after a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon poet-monk, CAEDMON began as a trio of veterinary students from Edinburgh University in 1973. The group’s early repertoire consisted of traditional folk and spirituals, as well as cover tunes. The band expanded to a quartet the following year and managed to stretch out their touring career nearly six years before disbanding where they began (at Edinburgh) in 1978. The band’s only studio album came as a result of a self-financed and produced private label recording with a pressing of just 500 copies. The band miscalculated the length of their tracks and ended up issuing a single that accompanied the vinyl album and which contained what would become tracks 6 and 12 on the 2002 Kissing Spell CD reissue.The band has claimed PENTANGLE and FAIRPORT CONVENTION among their musical influences, as well as fellow ‘Jesus freak’ musicians WATER INTO WINE BAND, who they appeared with in concert on at least one occasion. In 1978, a small christian folk rock band in Edinburgh released a farewell album to celebrate six years of making music together. The album was made on a shoestring budget and only 500 copies were pressed. The musicians went their separate ways.Caedmon's privately issued 1978 LP, has since it's rediscovery in 1992, been established as an expensive collectors item, rated as the best folk-rock album ever made, perhaps 2nd only to “Mellow Candle”. "The Gods" were an English group founded in 1965. The bandmembers included Mick Taylor (later with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the Rolling Stones), Brian Glascock and John Glascock (later of Jethro Tull).They were schoolmates from Hatfield and had been playing together as The Juniors (or The Strangers), a band they formed in 1962.Also part of this band were Malcolm Collins and Alan Shacklock. They had a record deal with Columbia. Their first 7" single (Columbia DB7339) appeared in 1964 (There's a pretty girl/Pocket Size). In 1965 the line-up was changed. Mick Taylor continued to play guitar and teamed up with Ken Hensley (organ/vocals) (later guitarist with Uriah Heep). They also added Joe Konas (guitar/vocals) and changed their name to "The Gods".In 1966 The Gods opened for Cream at the Starlite Ballroom in Wembley, London. A single (Come On Down To My Boat Baby/Garage Man) was recorded in early 1967. At this point the line-up included Mick Taylor, Ken Hensley, John Glascock, Brian Glascock and Lee Kerslake.In May 1967 Mick Taylor got a call from John Mayall who was looking for a new guitarist. When Taylor joined the Bluesbreakers, he left behind a faltering bluesband. The band sought to revive their fortunes on the club/college circuit. They relocated to London and secured a residency at The Marquee. John Glascock (bass) was replaced by Greg Lake in June 1967. The problem was that Greg Lake was too talented for the background role the rest of the band had in mind for him and in the Summer of 1968 he split to join King Crimson. The band had to re-group again and John Glascock was asked to return.With John Glascock back in the fold they recorded a couple of interesting progressive rock albums and a few 45s. Of their 45s, "Hey! Bulldog", the Beatles track, is their best known, and both sides have been included on compilation CD "The Great British Psychedelic Trip Vol. 3". The band played an imaginative amalgam of psychedelia and progressivism. Tracks like "Towards The Skies" and "Time And Eternity" from their 1968 album Genesis are full of heavy ploughing Hammond organ and distorted guitar riffs and Ken Hensley's unique and rather dramatic vocals add a further dimension.Most of The Gods' material is pretty typical late sixties pop/rock, epitomised by songs like "Radio Show" and "Yes I Cry". The compilation album The Best Of The Gods offers a good way to get to know the band's music. There are shades of Vanilla Fudge on their cover of West Side Story extract "Maria". On a few tracks like "Candlelight" and "Real Love Guaranteed" there is an inkling of the heavier sound Hensley and Kerslake would propagate in their next venture, Uriah Heep.The Gods were the successors of the Rolling Stones at the famous Marquee Club in London. After recording two albums, Genesis (1968) and To Samuel a Son (1969), they signed with a new record company, recruited Rebel Rousers singer Cliff Bennett and changed their name to Toe Fat which also lasted two years and two albums.

Best known for their rock & roll standard "Pushin' Too Hard," the Seeds combined the raw, Stonesy appeal of garage rock with a fondness for ragged, trashy psychedelia. And though they never quite matched the commercial peak of their first two singles, "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," the band continued to record for the remainder of the '60s, eventually delving deep into post-Sgt. Pepper's psychedelia and art rock. None of their new musical directions resulted in another hit single, and the group disbanded at the turn of the decade.
Sky Saxon (born Richard Marsh; vocals) and guitarist Jan Savage formed the Seeds with keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge in Los Angles in 1965. By the end of 1966, they had secured a contract with GNP Crescendo, releasing "Pushin' Too Hard" as their first single. The song climbed into the Top 40 early in 1967, and the group immediately released two sound-alike singles, "Mr. Farmer" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," in an attempt to replicate their success; the latter came the closest to being a hit, just missing the Top 40. While their singles were garage punk, the Seeds attempted to branch out into improvisational blues-rock and psychedelia on their first two albums, The Seeds (1966) and Web of Sound (1966). With their third album, Future (1967), the band attempted a psychedelic concept album in the vein of Sgt. Pepper's. While the record reached the Top 100 and spawned the minor hit "A Thousand Shadows," it didn't become a hit. Two other albums — Raw & Alive: The Seeds in Concert at Merlin's Music Box (1968) and A Full Spoon of Seedy Blues (1969), which was credited to the Sky Saxon Blues Band — were released at the end of the decade, but both were ignored. The Seeds broke up shortly afterward.
During the early '70s, Saxon led a number of bands before retreating from society and moving to Hawaii. Savage became a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. A collection of rarities and alternate takes, Fallin' off the Edge, was released in 1977.

The title track to this collection of rarities and alternate takes, "Fallin' off the Edge (Of My Mind)," is, improbably enough, a psychedelic hoe-down. Literally. Sure, the lyrics are suitably mind-bending, but Jan Savage's guitar playing is pure country. It works in spite of itself, but is hardly representative of the rest of the material (it's the only song co-written by Kim Fowley). It also proves that, contrary to popular belief, the Seeds did have other musical interests beyond psych, garage, and blues. "Daisy Mae," the B-side to "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," is another oddity. In it, Sky Saxon (b. Richard Marsh) wraps his wavery, sandpaper-edged tenor around an R&B number that sounds like a cross between Buddy Holly and Little Richard. The other numbers adhere to a more traditional psych standard. They include alternate versions of "Wind Blows Your Hair" (plus a reprise), "Nobody Spoil My Fun," and "Pushin' Too Hard," their signature hit. Although there's no topping their first two releases, Seeds and Web of Sound, fans are sure to find Fallin' off the Edge of interest.

Meic Stevens may not be a familiar name in much of the world, but in his native Wales the singer-songwriter's stature is often compared to that of Bob Dylan. A local legend whose psych-folk influence can be heard in such contemporary Welsh groups as Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Stevens also founded his country's first independent record company, the estimable Sain label.
Stevens sang mostly in his native language, a political act not unlike speaking Basque in Spain or Cherokee in the U.S. His one English-language album is 1970's Outlander, an outstanding marriage of musicianship and eclecticism. Arising from the same fertile soil as the work of the late-'60s icons, Stevens's album nonetheless manages to avoid easy comparisons. Its jazz-Indo-psych ragas merge seamlessly with its acid folksongs and Dylan-esque meditations on relationships and politics. Performed by a remarkable cast of musicians hand-picked by English rock tastemaker Ian Samwell, Outlander was created with a minimum of rehearsal and consists largely of first takes.
Greeted with critical acclaim upon Outlander's U.K. release, Stevens traveled Stateside for a two-week tour in the summer of 1970. But the album never crossed the Atlantic; its very first U.S. release is this expanded, remastered Rhino Handmade issue. Copies of the LP have fetched upwards of $500 on the collectors' market, a testimony to the enduring quality of its songs.
Now, fans can enjoy the original album in its entirety, along with nine bonus tracks, including outtakes, alternate versions, and the 1970 B-side "Blue Sleep." Outlander is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 2,500 copies. greetings...

The band called Twentieth Century Zoo hailed from the same Arizona desert land that spawned Phil and the Frantics, Kennelmus, and Alice Cooper's original band, the Spiders. This 'shroom fest includes their lone album for Vault, rare early singles (nice versions of "Tossin' and Turnin'" and the early version of "Love in Your Face"), and the requisite unissued demos, all recorded between 1966 to 1968. Another great psychedelic chunk of garage band gets trippy, reissued back from obscurity.

Hailing from the same gila monster-infested Arizona desert wilderness that produced an unlikely harvest of fertile bands (Alice Cooper's Spiders, Kennelmus, Phil & The Frantics) the Twentieth Century Zoo were the paradigm of what was happening to music as 1966 blossomed into 1967-68. These Phoenix shroom-heads stirred the savage fuzzback-laced sounds of the garage generation into the brain-baking trippiness of the emerging SF ballroom scene and made a concoction all their own. Includes the entire scarce Vault-label album, obscenely rare early single sides, unissued cuts and more!

Recorded in Los Angeles, this is a fair album. It's predominantly bluesy with a splattering of sound effects. The 'A' side to their first 45 was re-recorded when they signed to Vault in 1969. Their last, Only Thing That's Wrong is a non-LP country rocker. Thought to be a Los Angeles band they were actually from Phoenix, Arizona and were known until late 1967 as the Bittersweets, releasing three locally successful and now sought-after 45s before they added Ladd (from the Laser Beats) to the line-up and changed their name. Bennett was drafted late 1967 and replaced by Randy Wells (ex-Sounds Incorporated/Solid Ground). The Sundazed EP features three of the four Caz 45 tracks - Clean Old Man is missing for reasons unknown. Still, a welcome reissue and a chance to sample their earlier rampant fuzz-heavy-garage sounds that were somewhat diluted by the time of the album. The Sundazed CD is recommended. Compilation appearances include: Bullfrog (45 ver.) and Only Thing That's Wrong on Mindrocker, Vol. 13 (LP); You Don't Remember (45 ver.) on Psychedelic Disaster Whirl (LP) and An Overdose Of Heavy Psych (CD); Stallion Of Fate on Filling The Gap (4-LP).

Offering up a mixture of originals and popular covers (Bob Dylan, The Troggs, The Who), musically the set wasn't particularly original. With the band credited with half the material, tracks such as 'The Sky That Is Blue', 'Zepplin's Good Friday' and 'Yesterday's Child' showcased a tasty blend of tight, Beatlesque harmonies and surprisingly commercial melodies. It wasn't perfect with the band occasionally drifting too close to Mamas & Papas-styled MOR ('Gigi'). Far more impressive were the band's stabs at a harder rock sound, including the fuzz guitar and feedback propelled 'Where Oh Where Is Mother' and their vox-powered cover of Dylan's 'Baby Blue'; always liked the song's sitar fadeout. All told, the results weren't half bad; an album I pull out from time to time.

The non-LP 45 track "Portrait Of Youth" is an excellent track, other than that I'm not a great fan of this outfit. The LP has covers of the Who, Troggs, Dylan and more. The band had an earlier local 45 as the Obvious on the Cheetah label. The band is often linked to Dragonfly, but we've been unable to find any obvious connection except the "Portrait" track and the label.

"I'm looking somewhere for a new dimension, I'm leaving it all so far behind, Don't waste any time girl, step inside my mind...I'm five years ahead of my time". From the opening lines of The Third Bardo's awesome garage psych single of 1967, one knew trouble was brewing inside the youth of America. The barriers that seperated them from their parents generation couldn't have been pulled further apart. Later in the song Jeff Monn sings, "I'm doing exactly what I want to, Society can't play with my mind"- this is a true wake up call that these guys were out-a-site and from outer space. "Five Years..." is one of the classic cuts that emerged out of the underground 60's. Five Years ahead? Hell, was this really recorded in 1967? This is a brilliant garage psych burner and no doubt most people will only know the band through this one song. However, as good as this track is, they also cut a handful of others that were equally as good as their first nugget. Thanks to Sundazed for unearthing these lost tracks and giving them the spotlight they so deserve, we are now re-introduced to this bloody excellent NYC band. Vocals that shriek, guitars that glide in and out of "another dimension" and a bass line that pulsates like a heartbeat, The Third Bardo had it all and then in a flash, they were gone. Their cover of Rusty Evans' (from The Deep) "Rainbow Life" is just as awesome as their first single. It was in fact originally released as the B-Side to "Five Years". Imagine, being a teenager in 1967 and coming home with this 45! Woah! It must have blown people away for better or worse. Their name, chosen by lead singer Jeffrey Monn and extracted from the 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead', refers to a "return to reality". The inclusion of I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time on Pebbles, Vol. 3 (LP) has made it something of a classic among collectors of psychedelic punk. Deservedly so in view of its haunting intro and fine fuzztone guitar work. Subsequently it has resurfaced on other compilations:- Born Bad (The Songs The Cramps Taught Us), Songs We Taught The Cramps, Nuggets Box (4-CD), Pebbles Vol. 3 (CD), Trash Box (5-CD) and Best of Pebbles, Vol.1 (LP & CD). Rusty Evans of The Deep/Freak Scene wrote the 45 for The Third Bardo along with songwriter Victoria Pike, who was married to The Third Bardo's producer Teddy Randazzo (of Roulette Records) at the time. The excellent flip side of the 45 can also be heard on Vile Vinyl, Vol.2 (LP) and Magic Carpet Ride (LP) whilst another version of it appears on Freak Scene's Psychedelic Psoul LP. If that wasn't enough, David Walters (author of the excellent "Children of Nuggets" book) has pointed out that the version of My Rainbow Life on Glimpses, Vol. 4 (LP) is an acetate version, 20 seconds shorter than the final single and with a different mix! Both sides of the 45 can also be now heard on Psychedelic Microdots Of The Sixties, Vol. 3 (CD). In the early seventies, their lead singer Neufeld released an album under another pseudonym, Chris Moon. In the 1980s The Nomads did a fine cover version of I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time and Kenne Highland's Majestic Gizmos reworked it into He's Five Beers Ahead Of Your Time (!) on the LP of that name. In 1999, Rusty Evans has helped re-record I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time, My Rainbow Life and a number of other tracks with his son's band Kaos. Although currently unreleased, the new recordings are great, capturing the spirit of the originals. Rusty may also be writing some new material for The Third Bardo themselves, who played live again on May 16th 1999 with a line-up of Jeff Moon aka Neufeld, Damian Kelly and Ricky GoldClang from the original band. As for former drummer Bruce Ginsburg, his whereabouts are unknown - somewhere in California, whilst Richie Seslowe sadly died of a drug overdose in the eighties.

Biography:
Morita Doji (born January 15, 1952) is a Japanese psych folk singer-songwriter. Background She was 20 years old when a friend's death inspired her first album. She ended her career as musician in 1983, after giving a final concert in Tokyo. In the 1993 TV drama Kou Kou Kyoushi (a.k.a. High School Teacher) as well as in the 2003 TV drama Kou Kou Kyoushi 2003 (a.k.a. High School Teacher 2003), the song Bokutachi no Shippai from the third album A Boy was used as theme song. As a result, the greatest hits album ''Bokutachi No Shippai'' was released.

Great Original copy of this dark-clad acid-folk psych album that reminds me of Bridget St John. Original copy that comes with 3 inserts, all with pictures and detailed lyrics. Dark, melancholic and ethereal female vocals. Stunningly great and getting rarer every minute. Released in November 1975. Will certainly appeal to fans of Comus, Asakawa Maki, Slap Happy Humphrey, Japanese psych heads and late night acid folk adepts. I cannot stress enough the grandeur of Morita Doji, just over the top brilliant. She retired completely from the music scene and public view at the beginning of the eighties and will never appear again in the public spotlights, so here is your chance to lay yer hands upon her melancholic, late night and utterly desolate sound spheres. Highest recommendation. One of the all time best female vox records to emerge out of Japan of all times!!!
