PUFF was the 1969 extension-group of the Rockin Ramrods with songs written by founding Ramrods leader Ron Campisi and featured guitarist-vocalist David Allen Ryan (later of Sha Na Na) and jazz flutist/keyboardist Jim Mandell. The sound of the group was a marked departure from the Rockin' Ramrods. It was softer, more experimental, and for the first time introduced jazz, blues and classical themes into their music. Although the lyrics Ronn Campisi wrote in the early, middle and late stages of his groups were set against different musical idioms, there was always one thematic-constant of kid's dreams, adolescent desires & growing up.

The full name of Ag A.M. is Arbeitsgemeinschaft Ante Meridiem, (which means something totally weird like "The Anti-Meridian Study Group"). They were a varied kind of folky politico band with a very German sound, and a music that drew in an extremely wide range of styles, ranging from theatrical Floh De Cologne territory, via trippy psychedelia, all sorts of progressive rock styles, and on to country rock even! Oddball stuff indeed, certainly their music was an acquired taste and original too.Nothing historical whatsoever is known about Ag A.M., no, not even the musicians full names! All that they left behind is an odd album that is full of surprises, yet doesn't really fit into any genre comfortably. It's a curiosity, and aptly it's one of the most obscure of 70's self produced obscurities.

Review:
One could make the argument that J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings fantasy trilogy (published 1954-1955) had as significant a formative influence on the emergent hippie generation as did Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land (1961) or Joseph Heller's Catch-22 (1961). Certainly you can hear it in the twee archaisms of British folk from the era and in the more whimsical, otherworldly strains of British psychedelia (the Incredible String Band comes immediately to mind), and, in time, it would saturate '70s prog rock. It is right there, too, as a catalyst in American folk-rock (perhaps Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle," probably the Byrds' "Renaissance Fair") and Baroque pop (Sagittarius' Present Tense, Love's "Forever Changes"), and ultimately in its acid folk (Perry Leopold's dark masterpiece Christian Lucifer). But Chris Wilson took the inspiration to its logical extreme on The Grey Wizard Am I. His nom de guerre, appropriated from the novels, is the ultimate homage, while many of the lyrics on the album were directly inspired by Tolkien's imaginary landscapes as well, and even by some of his characters. The remainder convert the ins and outs of Wilson's bohemian life in Greenwich Village into a sort of fantasy world of its own. And it is all quite delightfully, if earnestly, done -- or, to be less precious about it, The Grey Wizard Am I is often a transfixing, bewitching little relic, particularly on such songs as "My Elven Home," "Go and See," and "Sunshine Down the Line." It's not likely to have a wide appeal -- anything this eccentric, unworldly, and chimeric, no matter how well done, probably has a limited audience -- and there is not a great deal of melodic variation from song to song to push it into the upper echelon of similar recordings. Nevertheless, The Grey Wizard Am I is a lovely little pastry for fans of obscure '60s and '70s folkadelica, ideal music for playing dress-up to, or for daydreaming.

Along with many other one-off major label psych albums such as Gandalf (Capitol Records) and Savage Resurrection (Mercury Records), the sole album by the Head Shop has become a major collector’s item in recent years. As with Gandalf and Savage Resurrection, the attention given to the Head Shop’s album is fully justified by the excellent psychedelic rock music contained therein. The album’s opening cut, “Head Shop”, begins with heavily distorted guitar and an insane scream. This is an appropriate introduction to a heavy, heady barrage of psychedelia. The group’s style is heavy rock, but it is driven by mind-melting fuzztone guitar rather than the more smoothly distorted guitar sound generally featured in heavy rock of the era (see Blue Cheer and Frijid Pink).
Thus, the Head Shop have created a demented fusion of ’69 era heavy psych and ’66 era garage punk. This makes for some very interesting original songs and cover tunes. The group’s version of “Sunny” is, appropriately enough, totally dark and creepy, driven by funeral-style organ work. Likewise, if you thought the Beatles original version of “Revolution” was heavy, wait till you hear the over-the-top fuzztone version by the Head Shop. The originals are perhaps even more interesting, including the aforementioned “Head Shop”, “Heaven Here We Come”, and the killer “Infinity”. Another of their songs, “Opera in the Year 4000” is a bizarre medly of an uncharacteristically “straight” original tune “Where Have All the People Gone” melded with another Beatles song, “Yesterday.” All in all, this is a most excellent and unusual album of heavy psychedelic rock.
Now that the LP has been reissued on CD by Synton Records, this fine album is finally much more widely available than the extremely scarce original 1969 issue. This is definitely a recommended release for psych fans.

This album is another one of my favorite acquisitions, from the many years I spent slaving over a hot computer, pricing vinyl at the record store... It's a really nice latin folk record from a group called PIC-NIC... The title is CALLATE NINA and this album has never been issued on CD, so once again I'm sharing one of my many vinyl rips... I don't have a lot of information about the group themselves, but I do know that the lead female vocalist was a star in her own right... JEANETTE had a fairly successful solo career as a pop star and after listening to this album, you can see why... She has a very pretty voice that soothes you, regardless of the fact that you might not know what she is saying... She is half-Belgium and half-Spanish, but English-born in 1951.. Her family moved from London to Chicago briefly, before settling in La Habra, CA where she grew up... Unfortunately though, the band didn't stay together for very long, so by the end of the late 1960's, JEANETTE was recording as a solo artist, having released albums well into the awesome 1980's...This album though is just lovely from start to finish... Some of the song highlights on this record include "En Mis Suenos", "No Digas Nada", a JANIS IAN cover of "Society's Child" and of course the title track "Callate Nina"... Check this out if you're looking for something mellow and peaceful... This might be your only chance to experience a PIC-NIC in Winter...

The recent deluge of mid-'60s relics that continue to rise from the vinyl crypt for a little modern re-consideration are too often more miss than hit. For every Pete Dello or Comus reissue there are seven or eight barely mediocre offerings from bands like Eclection or the Vejtables. Chrysalis, a colorful quintet from Ithaca, New York who dabbled in everything from folk, rock and jazz to Middle Eastern music fall somewhere in the middle, and their one and only recording, Definition remains a fascinating, if uneven lesson in the fine art of psychedelia. Frank Zappa, who championed Chrysalis as "a group that has yet to destroy your mind" was originally asked to produce, but was in the throes of removing himself from a bitter contractual dispute with MGM/Verve. In the end, Definition went through numerous production teams who all left for various reasons — none relating to the music or musicians — which makes it all the more curious that it sounds so defined and cohesive. Frontman Spider Barbour, who had appeared on both Zappa's We're Only in It for the Money and Lumpy Gravy — and who is now, ironically, a naturalist devoted to the lives of moths and butterflies — brings a great deal of early Mothers of Invention aesthetic to the table. Jazzy piano motifs flitter about truncated worldbeat rhythms, while short comedy skits provide segues between songs that deal with insects, yodeling girls, and hippie culture. It's all very Sgt. Pepper's, but there is an adventurous glee to the songs and arrangements that's equally matched by the talent behind them. It's the kind of brainy yet daft art rock that collegiate drug users, music school geeks and even children can find common ground in, and Rev-Ola's extensive liner notes and inclusion of eight bonus tracks from the sessions makes for a rewarding listen whoever you are.

One-shot masterpiece from genius songwriter Spider Barbour. His songs show remarkable lyrical and musical depth. Acoustic rock (not quite folk-rock) songs dominate, but the album is full of surprises, from searing fuzz guitar to the whacked-out fantasy “Dr. Root’s Garden” that closes the album. There are spots of jazz, prog (way before its time) and music hall, all of which can ruin psychedelic records, but work incredibly well here because they’re part of Barbour’s vision, not just attempts to be trendy. Favorite lyric: “God is a ring of smoke, wrapped around my finger, a wasp without a stinger, buzzing in my ear." Other lyrics veer towards the psychological and emotional with equally memorable results. Barbour’s voice is soothing and appealing. Nancy Nairn is used sparingly but effectively (two and a halsongs) as the other lead vocalist. Her unhinged performance on “April Grove” adds to the appeal and strangeness of the album but is effective precisely because it’s not overused. Some other songs are stunningly beautiful and tragic. One of the all-time greats.

This San Jose band from the mid-1960s has had a cult following for quite some time based on a tiny handful of local sides that passed from one collector to another, enhancing their rep by word of mouth. This ten-song issue on Sundazed's vinyl only subsidiary label captures them raw 'n' nasty, blasting through some studio covers of Who, Cream and Yardbirds tunes and a brace of their own stuff. Lead singer Beau Maggi was one of the best garage-band Jagger soundalikes, and the band had that nether ground between British fuzztone band and coming psychedelia down pretty darn well; it's all here to enjoy.

Similarities to garage legends like the Syndicate of Sound and the Sonics might be brought up, but this Southern California band don't always pack quite the same punch. A comparison to a band like Laghonia from South America might be more appropriate. Either way it is pretty solid albeit very short. The opener "Evil-Hearted You" reflects both the harmonious and garage side of this band, with good vocals but a loud bass and a good fuzz guitar workout. "Light Switch" greatly favors the vocal harmonies and mellower guitar of many British Invasion bands and closes with foreboding bells. The band then unleashes their take on some classic tunes, the best being Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and Love's "Signed D.C." The vocals are inspired, the musicianship is with much passion and the covers work very well as do the originals, a really solid garage album.

A self contained group [4 guys and 1 girl] common to this period. Though at times very loud and vocally histrionic the album flows as an uninterrupted suite. Everyone contributes, and as these things go Floating Opera isn't a bad record. They do a nice job with the ballads, and the album is cleanly produced. Fans of this style group/music will almost certainly like Floating Opera. The album is packaged in a nice looking gatefold cover with the lyrics inside, and the group's picture on the front.

The first two songs here are absolutely killer, making the rest of the album pretty disappointing by comparison. “Song of The Suicides” is a pained masterpiece with a stunning guitar solo and a melodic sound that feels like Zerfas. “The Vision” is a hot powerful rocker with some relentless organ playing by Carol Lees (many reviews of this album mistakenly claim that she’s a singer. Apparently some people review the album by just looking at the cover and not by listening to it, as all of the album’s vocalists are male.) The other songs are lesser variations on these two styles, without all that much inspiration, though the playing is strong throughout. Contains a song called “Age of Onan,” for those of you who collect odes to masturbation. [AM]

Who gave acid to these kids? Chemically induced or not, they committed a psychedelic gem of “Present Tense” (1968, by Sagittarius) and “Begin” (1968, by Millennium) proportions, lyrically and musically. The uniqueness and charm of the release is increased by the stripped down treatment of the vocals, which sound like voices of the best girls at their respective primary school – drowsing choir – and given a record deal, and it worked handsomely. If we compare with the superbly carried out the studio piloting backing up The Millennium, we will easily see that Curt Boettcher – the spiritual father of XTC’s Andy Partridge – was confirming his innovative ways of commanding recording knobs, facing this task as substantial part of the artistic direction, which became a kind of common sense in current rock-pop productions. With Wendy & Bonnie we have to take another vintage point. The release is the epitome of studio simplicity and technical straightforwardness, which more than often leads to utter crap, but not in “Genesis”. Wendy & Bonnie Flower knitted a masterpiece, and in the Palaeolithic way. In an era of hardcore industrial reproduction of works of art to which music is no exception, the album at stake sounds hand-made. A superior hymn to obsolescence, the way masterpieces mechanically produced should sound.

This is a very cool album. While it is definitely a late-'60s period piece, it's appeal is timeless.
The Flower sisters had a dark-angel harmony. Their moody take on the world is both innocently wide-eyed, yet wise beyond their tender years (17 and 13). The musicianship, by a soft-psychedelic stable of first-rate session players (guitarist Larry Carlton, drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist Mike Melvoin, etc.) under the guidance of lounge-jazz wizard Gary McFarland (Producer), is superb, adding colorful atmospherics and breezy Brazilian washes. This album was obscure -- the original record label went out of business shortly after the album came out in 1969 -- but it has had a deserved cult following for decades. Tim and Laetitia of Stereolab are known to be big fans (Tim called it "undeniably a great LP"), and it's obvious why -- Wendy and Bonnie had trail-blazed a similar musical path 25 years before. The voices are gentle, but never vapid. The arrangements are sophisticated, and the songcraft is solid. Genesis manages to avoid many of the cliches of late '60s SF psychedelia.

Biography:
The only pure hippie group to come from Copenhagen during the late sixties was Young Flowers. The aspiring guitar player Peer Frost had previously been in Peter Belli & Les Rivals. Blomsterpistolen (1968 - the title means "the flower pistol") was a milestone in Danish rock. The music was made for their own surrealistic TV movie of the same name (which also featured their "rivals" The Beefeaters). Young Flowers were strongly influenced by Cream, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles (typified by their classics "Strange Brew", "Axis: Bold As Love" and "Taxman", respectively). A couple of the tracks had Danish lyrics, including "25 Ore" (7:53), a never ending boogie blues derived from Canned Heat's "On The Road Again". More effective was the psychedelic jam "April '68" (8:56) and the shorter songs with strong lead guitars, studio effects (lots of flanging) and a really strong rhythm section. The group lacked a really capable vocalist, though.
The second album contained more of the same, ranging from the exceedingly flanged "And Who But I Should Be" to the "Calypso" in "Obladi-Oblada" style. The trio are joined by Niels Skousen on many tracks and by The Maxwells on the freakout track "Kragerne Vender" (10:31). In. my view, this album was their most powerful and best effort. Young Flowers undoubtedly inspired a flood of young aspiring power trios, including Blues Addicts, Terje, Jesper & Joachim and Moses (although these had a rawer garage sound). The three young flowers themselves would later resurface in several important groups: Peer Frost in Midnight Sun, Rainbow Band and Savage Rose, Peter Ingemann in No Name and as a session musician for hippie folk-rocker Sebastian, and Ken Goodman in Culpeper's Orchard.
